City to amp-up ramps to the Brooklyn Bridge

The city is promising to end decades-old bottlenecks on the Manhattan side of the Brooklyn Bridge by redesigning the lane configuration, moves it says will speed drivers’ commutes over the iconic span.

A second lane will be added to both the on-ramp and off-ramp from the bridge onto the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Drive in Manhattan, where for years selfish drivers have jockeyed for position, sometimes backing up traffic across the span for those heading out of Brooklyn, and to the Manhattan Bridge and beyond for those heading to Brooklyn.

“What a difference a lane makes,” said transportation commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan. “We are making improvements at longtime bottlenecks to make the trip between the two boroughs faster, smoother and more convenient than ever for thousands of New Yorkers.”

The expansion is part of an ongoing $508-million project to update the Brooklyn Bridge, which began in 2010 and should be completed by 2014.

By that time, the city says it will also add a lane on the Brooklyn side of the bridge at the exit for the Brooklyn Queens Expressway, where the same type of bottleneck still exists as drivers head toward Cadman Plaza West and Old Fulton Street in Brooklyn Heights.

“This will add a second access lane at this major connection on the most common route from the Brooklyn Bridge to the BQE,” said Nicholas Mosquera, a spokesman for the department.

The city says 120,000 cars cross the still toll-free every day.

Well, there she goes again... Genghis Sadik-Khan jamming changes down our throats without community input. This is Prospect Park West and the Pearl Street pedestrian plaza all over again.

Did the community even ask for this? I wasn't invited to any community meetings. I wonder if Jim Walden will take this case pro bono. Shut down the Brooklyn Bridge Ramps!

Um, the 2nd lane on the FDR side has been in use for a few weeks now. You can now stay in the center lane while heading southbound and easily make the exit ramp for the Brooklyn Bridge

Unlike some of the recent bike lanes, this addition to the ramp is in high demand. As a matter of fact, it probably has much more users than just about all the bike lanes have in an entire year. A lot of times, I go on the FDR Drive to the Brooklyn Bridge, the ramp has been packed numerous times. Part of that reason is because it has direct highway access. It's about time that JSK understand where the true demands are rather than just catering for the few.

Wow, Tal... I don't want this ramp. How dare you! This was a horrible decision. Where was the community process!?!

Where is the data for this demand? The DOT fakes all of their numbers just to ram these sorts of things down our throats. Typical.

I've never seen traffic backed up here. I have a friend with a camera taping this ramp. He has evidence showing there is never anyone using this road.

And if there's not room on this ramp, just use the next one. I'm so tired of all of these whining recreational vehicles that just want to go on the Brooklyn Bridge because of the nice view.

Actually, there is a a lot of traffic on this ramp. Part of that has to do with the fact that there has been roadwork going on there, which can hold the traffic back all the way to the FDR Drive. The funding for this is much more worth it than all the bike lanes in the city and even traffic calming in that matter. Last time I checked, more people used the ramp to the Brooklyn Bridge than all of those who use the bike lanes.

Tal - Careful you don't become a nattering nabob of negativity. Folks need both - bike lanes and Bklyn Bridge lanes - to see their beloved Nets play at Barclays, the new centerpiece of Prospect Heights.
