This roll-out needs more wheels!

City transportation bigwigs on Thursday unveiled the locations of 62 Citi Bike docks they plan to install in and around Brownstone Brooklyn starting in spring next year, and local transit enthusiasts have only one gripe — they wish there were more.

“It seemed a little on the low-density side,” said Eric McClure, who leads the Community Board 6 Transportation Committee, which unanimously approved the bike-rental station sites for Red Hook, Carroll Gardens, Cobble Hill, the Columbia Street Waterfront District, Gowanus, and Park Slope.

But residents’ dreams of more bank-sponsored bikes lining their streets could still come true — once the city wraps up rolling out all 62 new stations sometime in 2017, Citi Bike will look at adding more if it can find the funds, according to one panel member.

“It’s very capital and labor intensive to roll out the stations,” said committee member Bill Blum. “But the plan is to fill it in and, overall, it’s a great beginning.”

The new locations, which the city’s transportation department says it chose based on years of meetings with residents, can be found directly adjacent to most parks, schools, and subway stations within the community board’s boundaries.

Green spaces that will not get their own bike berths include Dimattina Playground in Carroll Gardens, and Harold Ickes Playground and Mother Cabrini Park in the Columbia Street Waterfront District, while Carroll Park, Boerum Park, and Nicholas Naquan Heyward Jr Park in Boerum Hill are a few blocks from the closest post.

Likewise, a few schools will be left in the lurch — meaning students will have to walk more than two blocks to find a rental bike — including PS 146 and PS 58 in Carroll Gardens.

But locals say they don’t mind walking a short distance to take the bulky blue bikes for a spin.

“According to the map there will be one a block from my apartment so I’ll definitely use it pretty frequently,” said long-time Park Sloper Doug Gordon.

Not all residents are thrilled, though — one local griped that the plans are conspicuously devoid of stations on some major thoroughfares like Court and Hicks streets in Cobble Hill and Carroll Gardens, while more residential strips are stuffed full of them.

“The fact of the matter was they weren’t on Court and Hicks, which is where those Citibikes should be placed, not in residential areas where you need the parking,” said Carroll Gardens resident Joe Ruiz.

And one specific station on Henry Street is likely to eat up parking spots near the Key Foods, so the city should move it to a no-standing zone around the corner on Degraw Street, he said.

“Where they are now they’re going to be taking up parking,” said Ruiz.

The full community board will vote on the plan at a meeting on Nov. 10.

Funny how the bikes "taking up parking" means public space for one person to store their private property for free is being converted to park 10ish bikes that can be used by almost anyone.

Car owners are a wealthy minority, choosing to drive in one of the most transit-dense areas in the world. Why does this paper regularly give them such a voice when it's just Me Me Me Me Me Me ME?

i keep one car in a metro north lot for pennies and the other at my weekend place and on the street FOR FREE as needed - oops pretty sure I pay taxes.. street parking is never going to go away so stop whining.

Obviously, the flat earthers that hate cars are the minority, otherwise they would be able to elect people that hate cars as much as they do. 20 years from now, they will still be whining about solar cell powered cars that are taking up precious space for free on the streets.

old time -- EVERYONE pays taxes to support the city coffers that pay for street parking. Everyone. You're not special in that regard.

There are no proposals to take away free residential parking, so the minority of residents who own cars (including myself) can be the ones that "stop whining." What is happening is the city is waking up to a better balance of street users' needs.

Private motor vehicles are sooooooo far down on the list of priority. Actually, in many ways, they are a top priority on the naughty list... because they actually interfere with real priorities -- namely, health and safety vehicles, commercial vehicle delivering goods and services, public transportation, shared transportation (including cars for hire, bike share, etc.)

I applaud you for storing your car outside of the city. That's perfect. That's appropriate. Yay! You're amazing old time. You should get a medal of honor. (Is that what you wanted to hear?)

This is great. But why put any of these stations on sidewalks? Wherever possible we should be eliminating on-street automobile parking spaces -- especially free parking spaces -- and replacing them with bike-share stations.

There's absolutely no reason why NYC should be giving away precious, valuable, public street space for free for people to store their horn-honking, exhaust-spewing, space-hogging, child-killing, planet-cooking, piece-of-—— personal motor vehicles.

Ask citibike anything, how many stations, how many rides, how many miles, etc., and they'll get right back to you with the stats. Ask them how they're doing financially... total radio silence.

Uh, Ben, that article you linked is almost two years old...and in any case, whether a private company is losing or making money is less interesting to me than the fact that the city is losing HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS of TAXPAYER dollars every year on the subsidies for providing free storage of private motor vehicles on valuable PUBLIC street space.

It is truly tiresome to hear the entitled whining from private owners of motor vehicles about the allotment of minuscule amounts of public street space to a public purpose, instead of for their private use.
