City installs new Downtown stop sign to keep tourists safe

A new stop sign on Cadman Plaza East and Red Cross Place in Downtown Brooklyn will keep drivers from flying around an intersection routinely choked with pedestrians searching for the Brooklyn Bridge, an advocate who successfully petitioned the city for the red octagon says.

“There’s a lot of pedestrian traffic, and to me the most important thing to do was reduce speeds of the vehicles that would blow around the corner at 20 mph,” said Brian Howald, a member of Community Board 2’s transportation committee, who submitted a request to the Department of Transportation for the stop sign in September.

The agency installed the sign and street markings in March, after determining that one was needed at the location, a spokeswoman said.

Previously, motorists traveling into Downtown from Dumbo encountered barricades at the intersection, where federal authorities have blocked off a stretch in front of the United States Eastern District courthouse to accommodate judges who like to park close to work.

Howald said cars that are forced to turn left at that point often speed around the bend into an area near the High Street subway station often crowded with walkers bound for the bridge, parks and sights of Brooklyn Heights and Dumbo.

“People are always crossing at that intersection and drivers are making a left, not looking at crossing traffic,” he said.

Now, with the new stop sign, motorists will need to brake before rounding that curve and pedestrians have dedicated spaces to cross on newly-painted crosswalks.

There haven’t been any injuries or fatalities at the intersection this year, but there have been four vehicular collisions, according to city data.

Meanwhile, Howald is pumped about getting the stop sign installed, saying that each little bit of pedestrian safety counts.

“In its own little small-town way it feels pretty empowering,” he said. “It’s good to know that when you spot a deficiency in how the city is protecting pedestrians and point out the error that they’ll come and fix it sometimes.”

It's mostly government vehicles, which will ignore the sign anyway because they're just "too cool" to have to follow the same traffic laws as the civies do.

In fact there is no parking in front of the court buildings. This is a security measure. There are bollards embedded deep into the sidewalks, and a permanent security box at the corer of Cadman Plaza East and Tillary Street, plus other security devices.

In the 1980s, the Puerto Rico Liberation Movement set off bombs in front of the Federal buildings then there, and the security measures were put in after the bombing in Oklahoma City.

Hi Andrew, you're right, the Feds blocked off Cadman Plaza East to enhance security. However, I think if you take a stroll down there you'll find quite a few people park in front of the courthouse. The US Marshals control the gates and lift them for those who have parking credentials.

Mr. Porter, when did you last walk along Cadman Plaza East between Tillary Street and Red Cross Place, which is blocked off at both ends to all without a permit that lowers the barriers into the ground electronically. If you had in the last few years, you'd know that this stretch of CPE is a parking area for court personnel. Pedestrians and bicyclists can pass the barriers on the sidewalks along Walt Whitman and Cadman Parks.

I hate to break this to some of you, but the tourists wouldn't be having this issue if they bothered to look before crossing, so this wouldn't even be an issue hence they are flouting laws as well.

The bike docks aren't "in the street," they are in the parking area... where vehicles park. How many bikes fit into the area where a single car fits? And not to mention, many of these docks are in places that provide "daylighting" at intersections, improving pedestrian safety.

What I do know is the DOT has put bike corrals in the street all over for no reason except to take yet more parking away from cars, as dictated by Vision Zero. Make it impossible to own a car in NYC. Take away parking, eliminate gas stations. The bike corrals in the street near me are never full and could be easily placed on the sidewalk. Win-win.

First of all, knock it off with impersonating me, because I find it both childish and a serious low to you anti-car fanatics. For the record, I'm all about having safe streets, but I'm feeling tired that it's always done on motorists only while it's barely being on others. Also, why should tourists get high priority here? What about those who are here on a normal basis? If you jaywalk, you are placing yourself into harm's way. I would like to know whatever happened to crossing at the green and not in between as well looking both ways before you cross the street? I guess those over on places such as Streetsblog and TA have this wet dream of believing that they can do whatever they want because they know that if they get hit despite flouting laws themselves, they can always blame the motorists for it while believing the most they will ever get is a slap on the wrist. BTW, anywhere else is this country and around the world, jaywalking is illegal and enforced more, but I'm surprised not much here in NYC considering how densely populated it is.

Ya know, some of the changes have annoyed me too... but, funnily enough, it's the bastardized changes that went from good engineering and traffic science to "yeah, it's an improvement, but too bad it's been sort of ruined by the whining of know-nothings like Montie who just hate change."
