Sept. 7 at MCU Park
Where is the mighty hammer when you need one?
Noah Syndegaard allowed three hits and three runs in two innings, and Cyclones relievers coughed up five more runs as the boys lost to the Yankees and hence, failed in their “Drive for 25” wins.
The Yankees scored before “Thor” recorded an out. After Andy Diaz was walked to open the game, Wilkerman Garcia tripled him home to make it 1–0. Syndegaard responded by striking out the next two batters and inducing a ground out, but in the second, Diaz knocked in two with a double to make it 3–0.
The Cyclones and the Yankees exchanged runs in the next inning. Kyle Higashikoa homered at the top of the third just as Walter Lagrange tripled with a runner on second to score Guillermo Granadillo to make it 4–1.
The Empire went on a tear in the next inning. With a runner on second, Danienger Perez singled to score Ryan Krill. After Diaz doubled to advance Perez to third, Garcia followed with a double of his own to score both Perez and Diaz to make it 7–1.
Our boys cut into the deficit in the bottom of the same inning. Jeremy Vazquez led it off with a double then Franklin Correa singled to score Vazquez to make it 7–2.
The Yankees and the Clones exchanged a few more runs in the seventh. Higashikoa went deep again to put the Empire’s run total at eight, but the Cyclones upped their run total to four when Scott Manea singled with the bases loaded to score both Cecilio Aybar and Dylan Snypes to make it 8–4.
That wraps up the season as the 2017 Brooklyn Cyclones finished with a 24–52 record, good for worst in franchise history — by far. The team misses the playoffs for the fifth season in a row.
The Yankees on the other hand finished with a 46–29, good for best in the New York-Penn League, which means the Islanders will be vying for the league title this year.
In the meantime, stay tuned for the 17th annual “Clonie Awards” next week!
