On BPR: Councilman and activist say kids shouldn’t die on our streets

Driving change: Roughly 1,000 street-safety activists strode down Ninth Street in Park Slope on Monday — one week after Staten Island resident Dorothy Bruns killed two young children crossing the road at Fifth Avenue — demanding city leaders implement traffic-calming measures on streets in all five boroughs in the wake of the deadly crash.

Brooklynites need to demand their streets continue to move away from their original automobile-centric design and toward a more pedestrian-friendly format, or more children will die beneath the wheels of cars, guests on the latest episode of Brooklyn Paper Radio told hosts Vince DiMiceli and Anthony Rotunno.

One week after two small children were killed at the intersection of Ninth Street and Fifth Avenue, Transportation Alternatives’ Paul Steely White and Councilman Brad Lander both agreed that cars shouldn’t own the streets, and people should — a point that was driven home Monday night during a safe-streets march in Park Slope.

“We saw an uprising last night,” Steely White said. “More than a thousand parents and kids turned out demanding we make sure our elected officials lead and get something done.”

Steely White pointed out that the reason cars seem to have the right of way on our streets is just a quirk of history that needs to be corrected, because, he claimed, during the past four years, 40 kids were killed by drivers behind the wheel.

“I’ll submit to you that if a kid walks out into the street, or a kid rides his bicycle the wrong way, that shouldn’t be a death sentence,” he said.

Lander echoed Steely White, pointing out that a system that instinctively lets off motorists who kill pedestrians — even when they break laws like yielding to people in crosswalks — is a big part of the problem.

“The law is the car must yield to the pedestrian, the practice is that drivers blow through and expect the pedestrians to yield,” he said. “The law-breaking in my observation is more than half the time. And there has to be consequences for that.”

The gang also touched on reeducating drivers about what they need to do while behind the wheel, creating tougher standards for those seeking a driver’s licence, and, of course, the battle with Big Auto and its gobs and gobs of liquid cash spent on enacting pro-car policies across this great country of ours (well, the last one is a bit of a stretch).

These activists don't make one peep about entitled cyclists who yield to nobody. Singing out loud to music on their earbuds, they arrogantly sail through red lights and stop signs. Have you ever seen a cyclist at a total standstill, waiting for a light to turn green? Of course not. Maybe we should force cyclists to pass a written test and a road test, and then wear license plates front and back.

When criticisms were leveled at the Soviet Union, the Soviet response would be "What about..." followed by an event in the Western world.

Of course everyone should obey the rules. But it's cars and trucks do the killing. Yes there are some people killed by scoflaw bikers but it's the bikers and pedestrians who are dying. The numbers are trending down but that doesn't make each death or injury less tragic. Given that in 20 years the computer driven car will make it more safe we need to teach ourselves to walk and cross the streets safely too...zero Vision Wont Happen WitH Out It.

I hate to break this to some of you anti-car fanatics, but the claim that motor vehicles kill more isn't a reason nor is it an excuse for flouting traffic with bicycles. The claim that they kill less as a claim has got to be the poorest claim any of you could make. That almost reminds me of how the anti-Israel crowd tries to downplay Hamas as terrorists groups in claiming that they don't kill as much as the Israel Defense Force or Mossad does. As for redesigning streets, I doubt they will do anything to prevent such accidents from happening when in reality, they will just create more congestion. Then again, that's probably how you guys will try to promote congestion pricing just by creating the very congestion hence the Bloomberg Way. Let's not forget that 9th Street in Park Slope is a major thoroughfare in that commercial vehicles will be using that as well, so redesigning it will make it hard for them with having such limited streets for them to use. What really would have prevented such an event from happening was better enforcement of the existing laws, and it doesn't cost anything to do that, just having the police and other law enforcement agencies do their job. On a side note, can some of you please cut the profanity, because it's making it hard for me to even think I could even take you seriously, and the same goes for any other personal attacks, which makes me want to even question your own age.

Vision Zero - in your first post you claim that WIlliam's comment is both a straw man argument and a tu quoque. Choose one.

In your last post, you seem to have settled on tu quoque. But I think you are wrong about that. The point about bicycle danger was not that since bicyclists disobey traffic laws, it's OK for motorists to do the same. Rather, the point likely was, include bicyclists in the fix, not just motorists, because bicycles also disobey traffic laws and therefore are also a danger.

The tu quoque fallacy is often employed as a red herring tactic -- they aren't mutually exclusive, Gary.

"But you don't even care about all of those dangerous cyclists." This is an appeal to hypocrisy (tu quoque) and it's being employed as a red herring distraction because the argument is about injuries and deaths caused by drivers of motor vehicle.

The fact remains, whining about cyclists in this context is ridiculous given the number of injuries and deaths caused by cyclists. It's just a deflection.

Now if the argument was just about private cars and ignoring taxis and commercial vehicles, well, that would be relevant. The lack of penalties / enforcement of the existing laws for not yielding to pedestrians in crosswalks applies to all motor vehicles.
