She wants North Brooklyn to feel the Bern!

A 27-year-old, self-proclaimed democratic socialist in the mold of Bernie Sanders who has never before held elected office stopped by Brooklyn Paper Radio to tell our co-hosts all about her campaign to unseat a Democratic state senator and one-time ally of disgraced party boss Vito Lopez who has served in Albany’s upper house since 2003.

State Senate hopeful Julia Salazar has been pounding the pavement in her would-be 18th District — which includes parts of Bushwick, Williamsburg, Greenpoint, Cypress Hills, East New York, Bedford-Stuyvesant, and Brownsville — collecting signatures to appear on the Democratic primary ballot in September in an effort to oust Martin Malavé Dilan, who will be running for his ninth term this fall.

And following her fellow democratic socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s still-buzzed-about victory over long-serving Queens Congressman Joe Crowley — the leader of that borough’s Democratic Party — in last month’s federal primaries, Salazar scooped up the endorsements of Democrats across the spectrum, including so-called progressive gubernatorial hopeful Cynthia Nixon; long-time Congresswoman Nydia Velazquez, whose district encompasses Brooklyn neighborhoods such as Bushwick, Greenpoint, and Brooklyn Heights, as well as swathes of Manhattan and Queens; and the second-term Bushwick Councilman Antonio Reynoso.

Take a listen now to hear co-hosts Vince DiMiceli and Anthony Rotunno ask Salazar — whose resume features activism and community organizing around issues including worker protections, police accountability, and criminal-justice reform — why she thinks Brooklyn is ready for her brand of governing.

Brooklyn Paper Radio is recorded and podcast live on Tuesday afternoons — for your convenience — from our studio in America’s Downtown and can be found, as always, right here on BrooklynPaper.com, on iTunes, and of course, on Stitcher.

Reasonable discourse

Henry Ford from Bay Ridge says:
The Commies can have a few seats in North Brooklyn. Real Americans will have the Supreme Court for the next thirty years.

Midge from Mill Basin says:
Mean people suck, don't they? We have a mean President, a mean Vice President, a mean Supreme Court, a mean Congress, and mean people who post comments under fake names and talk about "Commies" as if we are living in the 1950s and they are Joe McCarthy cowering outside his fallout shelter. Thank you, Henry Ford, for representing the distant, ugly past. You are already dead so I don't need to do what my late husband, Morris, may he rest in peace, did and threaten to kill you.
July 10, 10:40 am
Henry Ford from Bay Ridge says:
Good one Midge, but sadly for socialists, MAGA represents the future of this country. As you can tell by your accurate description of who is running every aspect of our government. Mean people get things done.
July 10, 11:56 am
Tyler from pps says:
Mean people create a toxic society and lower our quality of life... ya know, that whole pursuit of happiness thing.

Henry Ford from Bay Ridge says:
I’m sure Obama is a very nice guy for example, but every bad actor worldwide played him like a fiddle. I’d hire him to teach my children, but not to deal with the likes of Putin.

Ed from Bay Ridge says:
Russian trolls/bots are very heavily pushing the #walkaway tag.
July 10, 7:02 pm
Hillart from the Heavens from Williamsburg says:
Ed, that may be so, but the trolls on here are not from Russia. They used to hate Russia, would tell you things like "better dead than Red" but now they wear Red from head to toe and from skin to cell. But they're not from Russia. They're not even from Brooklyn. But they're paying rent to Russia in Brooklyn right now
July 10, 7:30 pm
Hillary from the Heavens from Williamsburg says:
In fact, Ed--8 of the first 10 posters on here are the same exact person running the same IP. And he's not Russian. Brooklyn Paper's moderator knows this already--they won't ban this particular troll. They claim to not be racist, of course. But they have a long history of enabling this troll. It's ok, of course. BP won't ban you, either, until you make fun of white supremacy, of brunch, of Smorgasburg or something of the sort--then expect the righteous hellfire

Hillary from the Heavens from Williamsburg says:
Ah, someone who surfs standing still! I love reading some Orwell, measuring “the Tide is turning” when commenting about Ocasio-Cortez and Salazar, as if they’re not describing their demise. Yes, OC trounced Crowley, membership in the Democratic Socialists is up, candidates are repositioning themselves, incumbents and our mayor call for ICE’s abolition in light of the BLUE WAVE, but the “tide turns” for you. Truly, blindness with 20/20 vision!
July 10, 8:40 pm
Salamanca from Bushwick says:
No joke! She's a registered Republican in Florida. Is this the first confirmed sighting of a demoratdinorinocialist? This is a thing now?!?!?
July 11, 1:16 am
Hillary from Satanic City says:
Every single one of my well written posts have been pulled down by the obviously left wing Brooklyn Paper - why? Don’t like to hear the truth??
They left up a threatening post by someone named Midge but did not want to hear about #walkaway campaign ...hmmmmm
July 11, 7:44 am
Yrallih from Williamsburg says:
Yay, Julia! Sweep away all this nonsense! Let Dilan have been in the area for 5000 years, let him have convinced everyone blinded--it would have been 5000 years of cynicism and corruption. The many years of experience have amounted to what, exactly? Begone!
