A United Parcel Service driver hit and killed a 27-year-old woman on Feb. 17 as she tried to cross Ashland Place in Fort Greene — just feet from Brooklyn Hospital Center, police said.

The motorist employed by the delivery service was driving its 1997 truck on DeKalb Avenue towards Flatbush Avenue Extension when he turned right onto Ashland Place and struck Sumiah Ali as she crossed the block around 6:30 pm, authorities said.

Cops said a preliminary investigation revealed Ali entered the crosswalk when the “Do not walk” signal was flashing, but could not say whether the motorist had a red, yellow, or green light.

Drivers, however, are required by law to give pedestrians the right of way when a signal is flashing, according to city code.

The 49-year-old motorist remained at the scene, according to officials, who didn’t immediately arrest him or slap him with any summonses.

Paramedics transported Ali, who lived in Bedford-Stuyvesant, down the block to Brooklyn Hospital, where doctors pronounced her dead, cops said.

When asked about the right-of-way law, a Police Department rep said the investigation is ongoing and could eventually result in an arrest.

“I didn’t say anything about legislation,” said Sergeant Jones. “I didn’t say he wasn’t going to be arrested. The investigation is still continuing.”

“Cops said a preliminary investigation revealed Ali entered the crosswalk when the “Do not walk” signal was flashing, but investigators are still looking into the deadly collision.

Already the NYPD is blaiming the victim for there own death.

Larry Littlefield from Windsor Terrace says:
If the Do Not Walk signal was flashing, the pedestrian had the right of way. A flashing signal is a warning that in a few seconds someone coming from the other direction gets to run you over. Not a warning that someone going the same direction as you are gets to turn and run you over.

They were both trying to beat the light. The pedestrian had the right of way.

So that means she was crossing WITH A GREEN LIGHT. That shouldn't be a death sentence people.

We don't want a non-water dependent use wasting our waterfront anyway. Get lost UPS!

I live a block away. This is NOT a very huge intersection. If the "Don't Walk," was flashing, she likely had plenty of time to cross. This driver was not being careful.

The victim was a dear friend of mine. She's an Arab-Muslim. And because of that, there are no news publication posting or talking about this. The driver hasn't been charged. And yet we have not been known how she died. If it was another race or ethnicity, this situation would've been taking into a different platform. It's about to be the fifth day since the kill and yet there isn't any charge nor arrest. A store captured the whole accident and the police department wouldn't allow the family to see it. They haven't LEAKED it. This is to show that police/NYPD are racist.

when a sign says
DO NOT WALK
WHY THE —— DO YOU WALK????
Whether it’s flashing or not
It’s YOUR choice
It’s YOUR life
You wanna play
Beat the signal game with your life???
Or play it safe and
DO NOT WALK?
Feb. 20, 9:51 pm
Janice from Fort Greene says:
Pina109 - A Walk signal can change to a flashing Don't Walk while a pedestrian is in the crosswalk crossing the street. That's because it's warning that although the pedestrian in the crosswalk still has the right of way, the light will soon change. It's not like the victim was crossing against the light. If the sign was flashing, she still had the right of way.

Peter Engel from Fort Greene says:
Anonymous from Brooklyn,

I am very sorry for your loss. I live down the block from that intersection and many of us were horrified by the scene on Saturday night.

For what it's worth, I don't think the NYPD will do nothing against the UPS driver because your friend was Muslim. They won't do anything because she was a pedestrian. For a variety of reasons, they seem to have decided it was the victim's fault for being there in the first place.

If you go back 10 years, there are plenty of circumstances where the police and district attorney gave the benefit of the doubt to the driver, letting that person walk. Detectives do not follow up with calls, interviews, returning messages, outside evidence like video or eyewitnesses, or anything else that would have made a case for the DA. And the DA has been fine with that. I guess it makes their stats look good too.

It doesn't matter whether the victim is white, black, brown, yellow, whatever...if they were on foot or a bike, law enforcement has no regard for Vision Zero.

I cannot say racism isn't some part of that equation, but avoidance of investigation is the infuriating reality.
A friend of mine -- white, Irish-Catholic, male -- was killed crossing the street in Queens last month. There is still no definitive proof that the driver was going the speed limit, other than his word which the NYPD is too eager to take.

As for the rest of you with your incessant sniping....GROW UP! A woman died. Save your juvenile antics for another place and have a little respect.

Frank from Furter says:
State law says a pedestrian should not enter the crosswalk when the don't walk signal states to flash but a pedestrian in the crosswalk is allowed to complete the crossing. None of that means a pedestrian should be run over anyway. NYC rules say that a pedestrian entering in the intersection even when the light is flashing has the right of way.

Tal Barzilai from Pleasantville, NY says:
Although I do give my condolences to what happened, that women still put herself into harm's way by jaywalking. According to the rules, you aren't supposed to cross if it's flashing especially if you haven't started. The rule to continue crossing during that only implies if you already started, which wasn't the case for her. Had she just waited for the next walk signal, the whole thing would have never happened, and she would still be alive today. You anti-car fanatics can act all you want on this and call for my death on by what I say, but the truth is that she jaywalked and that's what lead to her death. Perhaps, this will start showing why there is a need for better enforcement on jaywalking just like how it's being done everywhere else, but here.

She did not die on friday she passed away on saturday and she got hit at 6. I seen the video. Im her family. And its so so so sad that all of you are talking bad about her but she’s definitely not wrong. And she wasnt drunk. Shes muslim, shes a great person. May god grant her the highest place in heaven. G G from Brooklyn says:
First and foremost, the incident happened on Saturday evening around 6:30 pm, not on Friday.
, video shows that the intersection was cleared when the driver was making the turn, and all over sudden the driver felt like something was under the truck, he got out thinking that someone hit the truck on the back so he saw the young lady under the truck. There was a taxi behind the UPS truck so she might get hit by the taxi then her body hit the truck. Witness said the taxi hit the young lady and threw her body under the UPS truck. So when the UPS driver was making the turn the intersection was cleared on video.

Just reading that really makes me want to question your age and why anti-car fanatics such as yourself act in such a way. Nonetheless, I never set that the person that got hit and died deserved it, I was just saying that such an event could have been avoided if she just waited for the next walk signal rather than jaywalking and placing herself into harms way. I suggest you and your group try looking at the causes rather than the effects for once, so that you can understand what really happened and went on.

To the people who are saying that the victim was crossing when the green light was on, first of all the UPS truck was turning right that means the UPS truck had the right if he was going straight. But that wasn't the case. He turnd right which means that the victim had the right to cross the street. Even if she was crossing when the red signal was giveng her a warning, under NYC rules the driver were sepused to wait for the padistran to cross the street then turn. Although it real hurts to see most of you negative comments, all I could say to you is that you need to know the sides for both stories. I'm the victim's cousin and the whole family are going through tough times, so please keep the nigatviy to your selfs.

Feb. 24, 1:36 pm
Tal Barzilai from Pleasantville, NY says:
I just want to set the record straight here especially on those who continue to believe that I was victim blaming even though I wasn't. Nowhere did I say that she deserved what she had coming, I said that it could have been avoided had she not crossed when the signal was flashing. According to what Natalie just mentioned, that UPS driver isn't solely responsible for his actions. Please understand that not solely responsible isn't the same as not being responsible at all. What it implies is that although he did that women, it wasn't intentional hence not being negligible either. Getting to the truth of the matter, when a pedestrian or cyclist flouts traffic laws, they are placing themselves into harms way, which is a found fact. More importantly, I hate to break this to some of you especially the anti-car fanatics, but even though a motorist does kill a lot more when they flout the traffic laws, that still doesn't give pedestrians and cyclists an excuse to flout the laws themselves. In reality, I just tend to look more at the causes of the events rather than the effects, which helps me understand what really happened on such events. On a side note, if more understood the causes in the Israeli-Palestinian conflicts, then they would understand why the IDF does such measures to stop Hamas. Overall, my point is that not every accident involving someone getting hit by a motor vehicle is always the fault of the motorist especially if one bothers to read what really went on rather than just cherry picking like those over on Streetsblog, which is know for having an anti-car bias, that has a long history of doing so when it doesn't fit their agenda. Even to this day, I'm still waiting for Paul Steely White, who is the head of Transportation Alternatives, to call out pedestrians and cyclists that flout laws, which is still has the tendency to deny on such unless someone can prove otherwise, which will make me rescind on claiming that he has an anti-car bias.

I can not believe what this world has come to, people don’t have any kind of remorse, all that hatred comments just because she’s a {Muslim}. Does that mean she has no rights?! not as a citizen but as a human being, have some respect for the sad family that just lost a soul they all loved, the least you can do is post positive comments.Enough with the negativety you’re feeding your soul, you can not believe what the ear hears, but can only believe what the eye sees, all I see is racist people with no knowledge, and I’m growing angry on how media is taking control and brain washing what humanity is really about!!So stop with the fake Allegation!! P.S one question for everyone!.If u see a black man run out of a store and the alarm rings, does that mean he’s a thief?, if you see a Mexican holding a joint does that mean he’s addicted?, If you see a Muslim with a gun does that mean he’s a terrorist?, and if you see a white man grabbing a kid does that mean he’s a Pedophilia?!....what I’m tryna say is atleast have some dignity to know both sides of the story before jumping to conclusions!..and dont say I’m racist because of my questions, but that’s what media is making all of us look like!.

Tal Barzilai from Pleasantville, NY says:
Yemeniah, not one time did I bring up religion in my comments here. She could have been any other religion, and I would still say that she placed herself into harms way by jaywalking. I can assure you that in my comments, I didn't say anything about religion. However, despite being very liberal and open minded, I still believe that there is a thing known as racist minorities. On a side note, it would be very nice if there were more Muslims who actually do call out terrorist groups such as Hamas and Hezbollah on a regular basis especially on what they do to Israeli civilians with me being an Israeli-born Jew myself.
Feb. 25, 5:42 pm
Yemeniah from California says:
Tal Barzilai from Pleasantville, I did not mention you in my opinion!.I’m pointing fingers on haters and racist and what you are saying about Hamas and and what there doin to Israeli civilians has nothing to do with this report so I would like if you put your wrong feelings aside and start to feel what different religion people feel!,cause I’m sure you don’t wanna start this argument clearly WE all know what’s going on and who’s the real TERRIOST here!!! And again like I said everyone needs see and hear both sides of the story!and to be honest you people are acting just like them, putting your anger and hurting the wrong civilians, and last but not least social media is messing up everything and everyone!!!!religion and race has nothing to do with this sad very weak report!!!!

My sympathy and condolences to the family. She was an amazing very intelligent young woman whom life was cut to short. She was about to graduate Bachelor degree. We all can bicker about who's fault it is who have no evidence till there evidence then we can talk as of now let's respect the family as they have lost a sister a daughter and friend whom they thought the world of. Our prayers and thought are with them. It's sad people want to play the blame game with no proof what's so ever. Let's give the family peace instead of spread rumors of just a beautiful person whom lived a quite peace humble life. “Those we love can never be more than a thought away, for as long as there’s a memory they live in our hearts to stay.”
No need to disrespect anyone all we can do is be understanding that someone lost a their daughter. Please be kind to people on these very sensitive time. May god provide her Paradise. We should let the NYPD do their work hopefully this will be sorted out in the truth will put prevail.

ANYWAYS AFTER THAT SHE GOT HIT. SO WHEN HE WAS FIGHTING FOR THE LIGHT THE LIGHT TURENED RED BUT UNFORTUNATELY HE STILL PASSED IT AND MADE A LEFT AND CRASH ON TO MY BELOVED ONE!!!!!!!!! 🖤
