Last Sunday, a part of 3rd Avenue in Bay Ridge was the site of dueling protests, where protesters outside of Congressman Max Rose’s office had to be separated by police.

On one side of the street was former Brooklyn Assemblyman Dov Hikind, who recently formed Americans Against Anti-Semitism. He was joined by legendary New Yorker and radio host Curtis Sliwa and others calling on the freshman Congressman to stand up to the continued anti-Semitic remarks of his colleague Ilhan Omar (D-MN). Specifically, they wanted Rose to join the call for Omar to be removed from the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

Their rallying chants included “Max Rose, do the right things,” “Ilhan Omar must go,” and “No compromising on anti-Semitism.”

Omar’s incendiary comments over the past few months include her saying that support for Israel in the United States is “all about the Benjamins, baby,” insinuating that Jews use money to control foreign policy. She also said Jewish-Americans leaders have a “dual loyalty” to America and Israel. Rose accepted Omar’s half-hearted apology, and still supports her staying on the important Foreign Affairs Committee.

Not to be outdone, another one of Rose’s Democratic colleagues, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-Queens) last week compared border detention facilities to concentration camps. She said “The United States is running concentration camps on our southern border and that is exactly what they are — they are concentration camps.”

As a long-time professor of history, I often taught about the Nazi extermination of 6 million Jews between 1941-1945 in concentration camps and gas chambers. This was around two-thirds of Europe’s Jewish population.

At these facilities, medical experiments were conducted on thousands and most died as a result. This included Auschwitz camp Doctor Josef Mengele, an SS officer, who experimented on twins. He would pick them out as they arrived, and they would be measured, killed, and dissected. His experiments included putting subjects in pressure chambers, freezing them, trying to change their eye color by injecting chemicals into the children’s eyes, and amputations.

For most reasonable Americans, it is outrageous to compare what the Nazis did to anything. In fact, earlier this week, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum directly rebutted Ocasio-Cortez saying they “unequivocally reject efforts to create analogies between the Holocaust and other events, whether historical or contemporary.”

Yet, for the counter-protesters across the street led by local far-left group Yalla Brooklyn, there was no problem with Ocasio-Cortez’s despicable comparison. Indeed, she was treated as a conquering hero and there was even a large sign with the Mother of Jesus, crosses, and AOC (short for Alexandria Ocasio Cortez) on it.

This one sign is the perfect example of how far out of touch this vocal minority has become. They are mocking the church while supporting anti-Semitic Congresswoman Omar. Will Max Rose and other local Democrats continue to allow these people to define their party by remaining silent?

The unfortunate answer seems to be yes, because the last thing they want are the Democratic-Socialists and these folks running a primary against them if they don’t toe the line with their radical views.

Granted, it is not an enviable position to be in but sometimes you just have to do the right thing and be confident that there is a larger, silent majority who don’t agree with their views.

Bob Capano has worked for Brooklyn Republican and Democrat elected officials.

A political consultant and Dov Hikind... Can this be any more obviously connected to AIPAC nonsense that is very transparent in this internet-enabled era.

Barry from Kenya says:
Rose is proof that the entire Democrat Party is infested with anti-semites, even the so called moderates. The entire party needs to be purged, and a party that is loyal to America needs to rise in its place.
June 29, 8:42 am
Jim from Bay Ridge says:
Kudos to Capano for another spot on column and kudos to the Brooklyn Paper for not be like the rest of the local papers and having a columnist from the right side

Barry from Kenya says:
How sad is your life that you are up at 6am on a Saturday spouting racist, misogynistic threats, Quran Ibn-Jabaali? I hope the U.S. Secret Service is monitoring you. There has already been 1 arrest for threatening Ilhan Omar.
June 29, 12:03 pm
Barry from Kenya says:
No need to deport Omar. Just make her the face of the DemonRat party and win 2020 in a massive landslide.

James from Dyker says:
I hear Linda Sarsour is going to run against Max Rose in a Dem primary next year

Tyler from pps says:
You don't like the term concentration camp... Would you be OK with describing them as "systematically inhumane detention facilities in which children are treated like junk yard dogs and adults are stripped of any remaining shred of their dignity"? At what point does the so-called professor of history (though, I thought it was an adjunct lecturer of political science) start think "Nie Wieder!" might be applicable? Do we need government sponsored live vivisection and forced labor before we have a problem? Which part of the shoeless toddlers with full diapers being cared for by slightly older children sleeping with aluminum blankets makes you the proudest?
June 29, 2:44 pm
Gary from Fort Greene says:
Are the illegal entrants being treated so badly that they'd rather go back to their home countries? Didn't think so.
June 29, 2:53 pm
Tyler from pps says:
That's your measure of humanity? "This cold concrete prison cell is a bit better than the abject poverty and constant threats of violence and murder -- So yay! USA! USA!"
June 29, 3:43 pm
Barry from Kenya says:
It's strange that bigots want to deport an American. WTF is wrong with you idiots? DemonRat is the lamest whine of the racist right.
June 29, 3:47 pm
Barry from Kenya says:
Then you have the racist dopes who want to deport the children and yet abortion is a sin. Get your priorities straight, bigots. Your "god" must be so proud of you.
June 29, 3:48 pm
Barry from Kenya says:
Once you have a president that was born in Kenya, then the entire concept of citizenship is tarnished beyond repair.
June 29, 4 pm
Barry from Kenya says:
Then you have the dumbest of the dumb who actually believe Obama wasn't born in the U.S. These are the same imbeciles who think the earth is flat, vaccines cause autism, the Clintons ran a child sex ring in a pizza joint in D.C., and that trump is a genius. Be aware, these dullards walk among us!
June 29, 4:09 pm
Barry from Kenya says:
FACT: Anyone who thinks Obama was born in Kenya hates black people and is sooo mad they had a black President.
June 29, 4:11 pm
Tyler from pps says:
Correction Barry -- The Clintons ran a child sex trafficking ring in the basement of a pizza joint... that doesn't have a basement!
June 29, 4:46 pm
Barry from Kenya says:
These idiots don't understand facts Tyler, only bigotry.

Jose from Sunset Park says:
Omar is a totalitarian at heart. Her anti-Semitic beliefs come straight from Mohammed and the Koran he wrote. It shocks me that the Democratic Party embraces bigots like her.
June 30, 8:54 am
Ann Chilada from El Torito says:
The Democrats are a bunch of hypocritical bigots themselves so what’s the big surprise Jose?
June 30, 10:32 am
Alexis from Flatbush says:
I admit to being surprised at how anti-American the Democrat Party has become. My parents voted Democrat so I did also, but never again. It is shocking to see the so called moderate Max Rose refuse to condemn the bigotry in his party, so I’m walking away.

John from Bensonhurst says:
Finally a local paper that allows diverse opinion, not just from crazy left
June 30, 11:30 am
Vito from Bay Ridge says:
Bay Ridge is Italian land. Jews do not matter here. It's the wasteland. So what's Max really fighting for? You wanted assimilation, you want to live with the guineas. You got it. LOL.
June 30, 11:32 am
Joseph from Bay ridge says:
Thank you Mr. Capano for exposing Max Rose. I cant believe he refuses to condemn Omar. I am a Democrat but this is to extreme for me. The counter protesters at this rally Rose is beholden to were comparing AOC to the Blessed Mother. They are not and more in our community are seeing it.
June 30, 1:28 pm
ProspectHeightsResident from Prospect Heights says:
Damn Ilhan Omar and the camel she rode in on. As for deportation, if it turns out that she was married to her brother to skirt immigration law, I'd like the possibility that this would void her naturalized citizenship. The sooner we can ship her back to Somalia, the better. AOC, Ilhan Omar, and Rashida Talib should all be impeached and expelled from Congress!
June 30, 3:25 pm
Prof. Duck from The Truck says:
Hopefully the more voters of this city & state wake up and stop voting for candidates just because there is a letter "D" next to their name. We are at the event horizon of the black hole known as one party rule in NY. Our representatives no longer have the courage to represent us and submit to the vocal minority of easily offended social media reactionaries. All voters need to do their homework before going to the polls.
June 30, 10:41 pm
Tyler from pps says:
I’m so glad you right-wing xenophobes are outvoted.

@ Tyler from pps, It's the same turd who copies my name. They're a rabid trumpturd and they also posted this in another article: Taylor from Pnp says: Tyler dumb dumb, getting rid of criminals who are destroying people with hard drugs helps to improve everybody’s lives and is better for America. You are so triggered and such a little snowflake. You need to be red pilled, ask your boyfriend to to order some from his MDMA dealer
July 1, 11:56 am
Jim from Dyker says:
Hey Tyler (or J Quaglione) Maybe Capano will cost you another election?
July 1, 1:31 pm
Tyler from pps says:
Ha! Yes... Obviously I'm John Quaglione. You found me out! Of course no one could possibly think Capano is a garbage human unless I had some sort of political party axe to grind. (You do know that Quaglione still would have lost even with ALL of Capano's massive haul of 344 votes two years ago.)
July 1, 2:34 pm
Jim from Dyker says:
After spending all his life getting Marty Goldens coffee , John Quaglione actually had to go back to school to get his Masters after Golden lost. I hear John is doing well in college and actually just got a 90 on a test. Good job John

Henry Finkelstein - just because it’s not illegal, it can still be unbefitting of a member of Congress. She’s legally allowed to have and express her opinion. She might not be the best person to be sitting where she is if these opinions are what guides her decisions.
