City Parks honchos unveiled designs on June 19 for a planned $1.25 million makeover of Sunners Playground in Flatbush, which will provide local kids with new play equipment, water toys, and green stuff sometime in the next couple years.

The 8,000-square-foot park — located on Avenue H between Kings Highway and E. 49th Street, and named after the famed New York Times Crossword Puzzle author William Sunners — will be graced by two new play structures featuring slides, jungle gyms, and rock-climbing walls, in addition to swing sets and geysers that launch jets of water into the air, according to Justin Silveira, an architect for the park, who unveiled the designs at Community Board 18’s full board meeting.

Other planned amenities include new benches, drinking fountains, fencing, lighting fixtures, and “cushioned asphalt,” which Silveira described as like regular asphalt, but less painful to collide with.

Sunners will also benefit from new trees and features making the park handicapped accessible, Silveira said.

The project was funded by Public Advocate Jumaane Williams back when he represented the area in the City Council, and designs for the playground are expected to be finalized by winter, when the agency will put the contract out to bid.
