Senator Eric Adams and the Central Brooklyn Independent Democrats (CBID) will co-sponsor an education forum, June 1 at 3 p.m., called “NYC Education System after 2009 – A Change is Coming,” at the Union Temple on Eastern Parkway, next to Grand Army Plaza.
Planned speakers and topics include opening remarks by facilitator Chris Owens, CBID president; “Hopes for the Future Based on the Past Forty Years,” by Congressman Major Owens; an “Overview of Current System and Hopes for [the] Future.” by Tom Sobol, former NYS Ed. Commissioner; “Youth Critique of the Current System,” by Nzhingha Nkrumah, Youth Researchers for a New Education System (YERNS); “Contract with Our Children – Ten Non-negotiable Items,” Senator Eric Adams, “A New System Based on Human Rights,” Cecilia Blewer, Independent Commission for Public Education (iCOPE), as well as a question/answer period and summary.
This will be a community forum with other neighborhood CBOs also acting as co-sponsors in addition to Owens and CBID. This will also be the first meeting of others to follow and it is hoped that this will begin fill a community need for more information on what to expect in the NYC school system after the “Mayoral Control Law” sun-sets in 2009.
