Students attending school within the boundaries of the 68th Precinct should sharpen their pencils and their wits.
The 68th Precinct Community Council is asking sixth graders who go to school in Bay Ridge, Dyker Heights and Fort Hamilton to participate in the Commanding Officer for the Day essay contest.
Those who participate will answer the question, How would I stop bullying in schools?
The contest is open to students at public, private and parochial schools, said Ilene Sacco, the president of the community council.
“We are really excited about this,” Sacco told this paper. “We think it will help bring kids in, and parents will be interested. We want more people to be involved in the precinct council and we think it will be fun for kids.”
The competition’s timing was no coincidence. Rather, said Sacco, it was selected so that the winner would be able to spend the day at the precinct during the winter holidays.
The winning student, she said, will spend the day with the precinct’s commanding officer, Deputy Inspector Eric Rodriguez, who, Sacco said, “Will take the kid out to lunch, and for a ride in a police car, do roll call, things like that.”
Participation will be encouraged through the schools. Packets will be sent out to principals of all schools within the precinct area.
Each sixth grade teacher will be allowed to submit the best two essays from each class he or she teaches, according to the contest rules.
Each essay should be a maximum of two pages long and should be submitted (with a cover sheet available from the community council) by November 18th. Winners will be notified by December 2nd.
The first prize winner will be “Commanding Officer for a Day” at the 68th Police Precinct and win a gift certificate from P.C. Richard & Son. Second and third Prize winners will also win a gift certificate from P.C. Richard & Son.
