Long Island’s new Brooklyn-born Episcopalian leader received a warm borough welcome %u2013 complete with the skirl of bagpipes and a Chinese lion dance %u2013 when he arrived for a “meet and greet” service with his new flock at the Church of St. Luke and St. Matthew.
Bishop Lawrence C. Provenzano, the newly-consecrated eighth bishop of the diocese, was feted with a pomp-filled reception at the house of worship, 520 Clinton Street, where pre-service festivities included live entertainment, a ministry fair and refreshments.
Close to 1,000 faithful packed the pews to listen to the spiritual words of their new holy commander, whose ministry comprises approximately 52,700 worshippers in 156 congregations throughout Brooklyn, Queens, Nassau and Suffolk.
Bishop Provenzano was elected by the diocese in March while the rector of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Longmeadow, Mass.
