A weekend revel is much more fun when you take just a few simple precautions.
So say the cops of the 90th Precinct, who have put out a series of “Nightlife Safety Tips” that, if followed, would ensure that a night on the town will be a night to remember rather than one you wish to forget.
While some of the tips are basic common sense suggestions, police said that many partiers tend to forget these simple rules during a night of celebrating and often regret that they did.
Probably the most important recommendation the police can give is that you arrange a buddy system before you go out to a local bar or club.
That way, you and your friend can watch out for each other and protect yourselves from thieves and pickpockets.
Cops also recommend that women never leave their bag unattended while at a bar or nightspot, since someone could easily make off with your property.
According to NYPD CompStat figures, cops in Williamsburg are currently facing a 21.6 percent increase in grand larcenies, which include credit card thefts from unattended purses.
Most of the credit card theft victims are women who leave their bag hanging from the back of their chair or stool as they go over to chat with friends or go to the bar for another drink, officials said.
Cops also recommend that revelers, especially women, keep their cell phones on them at all times, so they can call 911 immediately if they begin to feel harassed by another bar patron or club hopper.
In order to prevent cases of date rape, cops recommend that women never accept drinks from anyone if they didn’t see the drink prepared. Female revelers should never leave their drink unattended for any period of time, in case someone slips something into it.
It’s recommend that you inform a friend or family member about where you are going to be in case something happens, always be familiar with your surroundings (street names, landmarks, etc.) and always take note of emergency exits in the bar or club in case of a fire or another emergency.
Cops also recommend that you never leave a bar or club with a stranger, never drink and drive or accept a ride from anyone who has been drinking.
Revelers should also make sure they have enough money for a taxi if they feel that they will need one.
