Two thumbs up for Youth Happen’n

Benefactors and participants in this summer’s Youth Happen’n were feted by Community Board 17 at the board’s September meeting.

Patricia Reddock, the chairperson of CB 17’s Youth Services Committee, praised those who gave of their time and money for the good they did for area kids, about 4,000 of whom attended the August event, which was held in Paerdegat Park.

“People like you, who take care of the youth, God bless you all,” noted Reddock, addressing those of the Youth Happen’n supporters who had attended the meeting, which was held at the First United Church of Jesus Christ, 590 Utica Avenue.

In particular, Reddock praised Shelby Oliver and Floyd Gilmore for their help in getting food for the kids attending the Youth Happen’n, after the city’s Department of Education, at almost the last minute, cut the number of meals it usually provides from 4,500 to 3,000.

Thanks to the two, she said, thousands of franks and buns were donated, as well as a Mr. Softee truck which, said Reddock, “Stayed three hours and gave away free ice cream to the kids.” Gilmore “also gave us girt cars from Modell’s to give to the kids,” Reddock added.

Also honored were volunteers who worked the day of the event. They were Gail Reed Barnett, Coralita Branker, Felix Brome, Mechelle Brunson, Veronica Carey, Derek Cyrus, Rodrick Daley, Hazel Foster, Allison French-Kenton, Morgan Gabriel, Adlin Gallimore, Carla Harmon, Jeffrey Herry, Emelia Lloyd, Nadine Lyons, Horace Millington, Sonia Palacios, Lawrence Pampellone, Rose St. Albord and Jorge Tait.
