del.icio.usSomebody doesn’t like Councilman Domenic Recchia — and has taken it upon himself to “go negative” against the Bensonhurst Democrat even before it’s clear what higher office he’s seeking.
Last week, someone re-distributed an unsigned “Community Report Card” that gives Reccia F’s on “stopping over-development,” “creating affordable housing,” for “wanting to convert Asser Levy Park into an amphitheater,” “neighborhood cleanliness” and “creating jobs in Coney Island.”
His only A’s were for “giving himself a $12,650 raise” and receiving a 2006 NY Daily News “Knucklehead Award” for justifying the raise by “declaring he slaved full time for his constituents,” despite earning $250,000 from his law firm.
For his part, Recchia said he stands by his record of funding parks in his district and creating affordable housing in Coney Island. He said the mysterious report card first appeared a few months ago — then quickly dismissed it as having “no credibility whatsoever.”
The issues addressed by the card seem to focus on Coney Island, which falls in Recchia’s district, and may have been connected to his defense of Thor Equities’ proposed $1.5-billion, Las Vegas-style theme park.
The return of the flyer may be an early salvo against Recchia’s apparent plans to take on Rep. Vito Fossella (R–Bay Ridge) next year, or perhaps run for borough president in 2009.
Recchia, who would face Democratic primaries for either seat, has not said which seat he wants.
“People are afraid that I could be very successful and they are trying to discredit me,” Recchia told The Brooklyn Paper.
