Half Foods! Whole Foods’ Brooklyn plan being retooled

Whole Foods is “revising” its secretive plans for their first Brooklyn store, The Brooklyn Paper has learned.

Without revealing much about the grocer’s specific plans for a market at the corner of Third Avenue and Third Street, a spokesman acknowledged that the company is “currently revising our plans for our Brooklyn store,” said Fred Shank, in an e-mail.

The announcement of the revision came after the upscale food grocer announced it would reduce the number of stores it planned to open across the country due to the worsening economy.

“We hope to be able to announce updated details in the near future [and] remain extremely excited about bringing the first Whole Foods Market to Brooklyn,” Shank added.

It’s the latest admission that the stalled supermarket is off track.

The company bought the site a few years ago only to learn later that the former home of a gas refinery and concrete recycling plant was severely contaminated and would require far more extensive remediation than anticipated.
