Tish of the day: Councilwoman finally pays her back taxes!

The Brooklyn Paper

Councilwoman Letitia James moved quickly this week to diffuse what could have been a major distraction in her re-election campaign, personally heading to a Department of Finance office in Manhattan to pay $9,000 in overdue property taxes on her Lafayette Avenue house.

The April 7 payment still leaves a balance of $837.46, according to city records.

James had initially told The Brooklyn Paper that she hasn’t paid the year-old bills because she was waiting for her IRS refund check, but later decided that media coverage of her debt to society, first reported by our sister publication, Courier Life, had become “a distraction.”

Mac Support Store

“It’s my responsibility,” she said on Thursday, adding that she never saw the late payments as a scandal.

“I’m not removed from the tough times in this economy,” said James, who makes $122,500 as the people’s representative for Fort Greene and Clinton Hill. “I’m not unique as a New Yorker.”

When asked how the information came to light in the first place, James suggested that someone leaked it to a reporter.

“It came from the millionaires and the billionaires I’ve challenged over the years,” she said, a reference to her opposition to the Atlantic Yards project and to its developer Bruce Ratner, who has funded a non-profit run by Delia Hunley-Adossa, James’s main opponent for the Democratic nomination in September.

James had taken a swipe at Hunley-Adossa over that non-profit as the property tax scandal unfolded last week.

“If I started a not-for-profit, I could take money from [Mayor] Bloomberg and Ratner to pay [my property taxes],” she quipped at the time.

James isn’t alone in paying late, though she owes significantly more than other public figures.

In the wake of the James mini-scandal, The Brooklyn Paper conducted an exhaustive search of city records and discovered that Councilwoman Darlene Mealy (D–Williamsburg) owes $842 since October, 2008, on her Herkimer Street residence.

One of Brooklyn’s literary elite has an overdue bill, too. Jonathan Safran Foer — well known to Brooklyn Paper readers as the greatest writer of his generation — owes the Finance Department $0.05 on his Park Slope manse, most likely not enough to trigger any punishment from city officials.

Last May, James ran into deeper trouble when her campaign was fined $5,000 by the Campaign Finance Board for overpaying a staff worker with taxpayer money provided through the city’s public campaign financing.

Why do wrong do'ers blame others for their mistake. Council Woman you failed to pay your taxes on time simple. Glad to see you catchup. No need to raise the boogie man trying to get you scenerio.

I am just a voice for the voice-less. The 50% unemployed minority in your district who wants to know what is your alternative plans to bringing jobs to the Borough?

Renee from Clinton Hill says:
I heard Tish James charged her tenants exhorbitant rents for their tiny apartments on the second and third floors (she split the third floor into even tinier apartments)...so why exactly was she not able to pay her taxes like all other law abiding citizens? Oh, my bad, she probably feels as a CM, she's above the law. at such a grass roots level and she's already exhibiting signs of "corrupt politician" for shame.
Who knows where her opponent received her money, but that's a low blow Tish. Taking the attention away from yourself and making false accusations w/out evidence, will you ever learn? Taking credit for the things your constituents do because you didn't have the pull to enact them yourself, wow. Inept and not paying your taxes, wow? THat Hunley lady is looking better and better.

Tish made her bed and now she's sleeping in it. It was a story, let's move on. Tish get us some jobs.

Phoebe from Crown Heights says:
"the tough times of this economy" ? has she taken a pay reduction? is she one of the many self employed that have no credit available? Get a grip, set an example and balance your own budget Ms James.

Wow, what a lot of ugliness. What a lot of bitter people throwing stones and passing judgement on a situation that they probably know nothing about. In my dealings with Tish she has been nothing but positivity and grace. Something which I find lacking in many of these comments.

As for an alternative plan Judah. Why don't you check out this:

http://www.unityplan.org/

Unfortunately it's hard to propose alternatives when deals are being made between developers and "other" politicians behind closed doors. Talk about irresponsibility.

Judah Spechal from Bed-Stuy says:
Peter, I am sorry if you see a legit question as throwing stones. Just asking a question about jobs jobs jobs. I am quite sure Tish (sorry I don't know her to call her that) Mrs James is a fine public servant. Just want to know when a public servant oppose job creation for half of the people she represents(???); the unemployed. Someone has to ask: What's the alternatives? No one speak to/for these people, only at flesh pressing time for votes. I have only heard Mrs James & her defenders speak for getting rid of an opportunities that are few & far between for these folks. In case you have been at sea, big developments in this City with or with out tax $$$ hardly employ the few who would have gotten work at this site. We can argue about the merits or how out of scale this development is but that's a purely special interest argument. I have no interest in that. So don't get me started on protecting someone's condo vs. job creation. You & Mrs. James will lose that argument. I don't know who her opponent is, but I intent to oppose all incumbent who oppose job creation. I am charging up my bullhorn & mixing the paint to make my signs.
April 14, 2009, 2:49 pm
Judah Spechal from Bed-Stuy says:
One more thing: A true leader of a divided people would have tried to bridge the gap. It seems Mrs. James & the other politicians who oppose this development took sides. Is that leadership?
April 14, 2009, 2:52 pm
Liam from Clinton Hill says:
Judah, maybe you don't know a ruddin' thing about politics, but it's INDEED the job of politicians to "take sides" on issues. It is their RESPONSIBILITY to look at the costs and benefits of issues like development and make a call, being that they're paid that 122K (that's a flat salary, btw, Tish isn't getting any special bonuses). You should hold your representative to the same standard.

And, FYI, people like 100 Blacks in Law Enforcement, Boerum Hill Association (BHA), Central Brooklyn Independent Democrats (CBID), Committee For Environmentally Sound Development, Creative Industries Coalition, Democracy for New York City (DFNYC), and activist Kevin Powell, Newark mayor Corey Booker, activist and personality Bob Law, actor Steve Buscemi, author Jonathan Safran Foer, actress Rosie Perez, author Jhumpa Lahiri, actress Michelle Williams, and former Congressman Major Owens are all associated with efforts to re-address big development plans like Ratners. See DDDB's website and others to confirm that.

It's good that Tish's name is perennially attached to this issue, but it's flatly untrue that she's a sole voice shouting into the forest. She's heavily supported by both poorer people who want REAL fair and affordable housing, as well as home-owning residents who don't dig eminent domain usurping their land.

Lastly, I don't know how ya'll get down in Bed-Stuy, but over here in the Fort Greene/Clinton Hill area, we don't consider ourselves a "divided people."
April 14, 2009, 11:18 pm
Liam from Clinton Hill says:
FYI- Show me when and where Letitia James (or anyone in a 15 meter distance from her) said they oppose job creation. Just because you say something, doesn't make it fact. FACT: her office has sponsored numerous job and career fairs, and is planning more come this summer (I read this on her blog).

Saying big development limits job creation is like saying anti-robbery laws limit economic growth. Stop spouting nonsense.

Judah Spechal from Bed-Stuy says:
Maybe you should stop sipping Greene Grapes for a minute & get to know your neighbors. Fort Greene/Clinton Hills is a very divided community.
Get to know not just the people who live in the beautiful Brownstones & Townhouses. But get to know the people who are constantly moving to Bed_Stuy cause they are being priced out of your wonderfully unitified community.

Get to know those who are trying to hold on out there, you know the ones who sacrifice to make Forth Greene/ Clinton Hills what it is today. The ones who witness addicts OD'ing in Forte Greene & Fulton St Park. The ones who had to check the playgrounds for needles before their kids could play. You will be surprise, they don't feel unity brother.

I sincerely hope you are not Mrs James campaign manager cause if you are Liam she will surely loose her re-election. It's too bad her opponent doesn't seems to have a backbone & say she is for jobs jobs jobs at the Atlantic Arena !!!
Cause any decent candidate should defeat all these incumbants who allow this Mayor to sellout this city & then change term limits.

Glad to see you know so many boldface names, I guess that makes everything alright.

P.S. Maybe next time we are having an event over here you can send some of those celebs over here. We'd like to make the 11o'clock news to. We enjoy a good farce; as we pretend like we are doing something for the little people.

Judah Spechal from Bed-Stuy says:
One last thing my Dear friend Liam: No politicians/civic leader in this great city of our should tout their job creating abilities especially for minorities. While everyone is feeling it since this eco-downturn minorities have been in the bottomless pit of a recession for a minute.

And don't get me started on the schools!
April 15, 2009, 2:01 am
Peter from Fort Greene says:
Bruce Ratner: Atlantic Yards Developer and Champion for the Black Cause! Isn't this the same developer who designed Atlantic Mall as such an ugly maze so that the local people couldn't congregate in large areas. Judah, you think Ratner has an eye out for the "little people" as you call them. This is a project about money and putting the control of a great deal of downtown Brooklyn into the hands of ONE developer.

As for your talk of a divided community, maybe you should take a look at yourself before you cast aspersions on others. All your talk of "us" and "them" is very divisive.

How quaint of you Peter. You've probably read my post a few times trying to find something to call me whatever name.

Let me help you. I am a grown man, short in statue with broad shoulders, a quick wit, intelligent mind, who enjoys a healthy debate. I'm a virgo, a film-maker, an author, a proud father of one & one thing I will never have to do in this lifetime is defend my love for humanity.

Read my post again, I am certainly not a champion for Ratner. I am a champion for the poor. Remember them??
I frankly don't care which developer develops Brooklyn or NYC for that matter. Development & tax $$$ are what happens in big Cities.

Glad to see Mrs James have so many defenders, maybe one of you can help me with some simple numbers.

Construction recently at the clock tower, the highrise on Fulton & Ashland, the jobsite on Dekalb & Rockwell, the DOT/MTA road project @ Lafayette & Flatbush right by BAM, The construction site on Myrtle & Flatbush EXT. on both sides, Highrise across from the Roberson Theatre, Highrise going up on Greene Ave bet. Classon & Franklin, just completed road project along Fulton Street, projects that was in Forte Greene Park. The many new business along Myrtle Ave, & Fulton Street.

Tell us, how many poor Forte Greene/Clinton Hills resident were/is employed at any of these sites???
I did have a friend who got a security job when the highrise @ Fulton & Ashland was going up, but he's a life long resident of Bed-Stuy. So that don't count. He needed the job. He has a wive & 4 kids. He put in 12hrs/7day/wks overnight to make ends meet.

Furthermore, I missed the protest by Mrs James, DDDB, all of your boldface friends, & "so called civic leaders", to help get any of those poor resident employment at these site. Seeing as how you block their possible employment @Atlantic Yards.
Maybe I missed the news flash of the protest. I stopped watching the 11pm news. Got tired of seeing you all hob-knobbing with the goobber smooching celebs at another one of your farce.
Be kind & send me a link with protest.

P.S. How soon before the projects on Myrtle are privatize into co-op? Avlon Bay & Casamadeses dude don't invest Millions to have their well heel clients staring at projects?

Peter from Fort Greene says:
Judah, honestly I try reading what you've written but it's a little hard to make sense of. Take responsibility for your own community and stopping blaming politicians for the mess your in.
April 15, 2009, 8:07 pm
Judah Spechal from Bed- Stuy says:
Brooklyn is were I'm from, Brooklyn is where I pay taxes! Brooklyn is where I'll be. Brooklyn is where I'll speak! Brooklyn is where I hope to take my last breathe.

Peter I'll assume that if you had reply to my query, you would have proved my point about Mrs. James & other glam politicians in this city.
