Wilco will play Keyspan Park in Coney Island on July 13 — and we’ve got two tickets to give away!
The Chicago-based band announced on Monday that Jeff Tweedy, Brooklynite Mikael Jorgenson and the rest of the band will make the stop at the 7,500-seat minor league baseball stadium as part of its “Ashes of American Flags” tour. It’s the only New York-area stop on the tour.
As such, this is one hot ticket, so imagine our excitement to be giving away two ducats to the show. And if you don’t know Wilco, you’d better bone up quick. Here’s a primer: One of the earliest proponent of what has come to be known as “roots rock,” the band was formed after the breakup of Tweedy’s former band, Uncle Tupelo.
Wilco’s debut album, “A.M.,” was released in 1995 and featured a hodge-podge of rock inflences, from the “Country Honk” style of the Rolling Stones to the distorted guitar of Neil Young (“Shouldn’t Be Ashamed”).
The fairly straight-up country sound of “A.M” was followed by three increasingly experimental albums, “Being There” (1996), “Summerteeth” (1999), and peaking (commercially, at least) with the 2002 opus, “Yankee Hotel Foxtrot,” which propelled the band onto center stage and has sold more than half a million copies.
Through it all, Tweedy remained close to the edge. The making of the album was chronicled in the 2002 documentary, “I Am Trying to Break Your Heart,” which detailed the excrutiating falling out between Tweedy and guitarist/keyboardist Jay Bennett that led to Bennett’s departure and at least one vomiting attack by Tweedy.
Wilco has since released two more studio albums, “A Ghost is Born” (2004), which won two Grammys, and “Sky Blue Sky”(2007). A seventh album, currently untitled, is in the works, and is scheduled to be released in June.
