What’s with all the laptop thefts

for The Brooklyn Paper

Gonetops

The neighborhood is in the midst of a spate of laptops thefts. Here’s a rundown:

• A burglar broke into a St. John’s Place apartment on Jan. 12 and took two Dell laptops, each worth $1,200. A neighbor told cops that he saw someone enter the apartment, which is between Seventh and Eighth avenues, at 8:15 am.

• Someone stole $2,000 worth of electronics from an apartment on President Street on Jan. 12. The owner told cops that she left her apartment, which is between Fourth and Fifth avenues, at 8:30 am. When she returned around midnight, she noticed that her laptop and two external hard drives were gone.

• Someone forced the front door of an apartment of Sackett Street and stole a $1,500 Apple on Jan. 15. The owner told cops that she left her apartment, which is between Fourth and Fifth avenues, at 8 am, and returned at 7 pm to find her computer missing.

Car gone

A thief stole a car from President Street on Jan. 8, leaving no broken glass and no trace of a break-in.

The owner had parked the black Acura between Sixth and Seventh avenues at around 5 pm, but it was gone one hour later.

Van-to-car

Somebody broke into a van on Second Avenue on Jan. 12 and stole $1,400 worth of electronics and construction equipment.

A witness told cops that he saw someone drive away in a brown sedan at 10:30 am. When the owner checked his van, which had been parked between Ninth and 10th streets, he noticed that the thief had taken an iPod, a cellphone, and several construction tools.
