The writing on the wall — “Building sold!” — scared some book lovers, but the good news is that Heights Books will live on.
The five-story building at 109 Montague St., between Hicks and Henry streets, sold this week for $3.7 million, but the 18-year-old bookseller has some good news of its own: it’s moving to Smith Street in nearby Cobble Hill next month.
“My preference was to stay in the Heights, but the new space is nicer,” said co-owner Tracy Walsch, citing a leaky roof, among other shortcomings of the current location.
The new shop will be at 120 Smith St., near Dean Street.
Walsch said she loves the new location. She’d love it even better if the economy would only play along.
“In this market, it’s tough. Retail sales are down, and moving is expensive,” she said.
The store will retain its Brooklyn Heights-centric name, despite its new neighborhood. Walsch said the move is not out of loyalty, but merely to maintain continuity for her online buyers.
