Pianos are going to be scattered throughout Brooklyn starting on June 21 — but it’s your job to take control of them lest some yahoo sit down and start playing “Heart and Soul” for hours.
Working pianos will be available at Brooklyn Bridge Park’s Pier 1 in DUMBO, the Coney Island Boardwalk and McCarren Park in Greenpoint, among other locales, part of a plan by the organization Sing For Hope to get Brooklynites involved in music and their surroundings.
Unfortunately, there’s a hard and fast rule about pianos: left alone for five minutes, they become a surefire target for popular nuisances such as “Chopsticks” and “Three Blind Mice.”
And officials at Sing for Hope confirmed that the pianos are not set to explode should anyone start playing one of these tunes.
“I don’t think the city would allow us to do that,” said spokeswoman Emily Walsh.
That said, it’s time to heed the call, Brooklynites — pick a real song and get playing.
“Play Me, I’m Yours” Pianos will be installed June 21-July 5 at Brooklyn Bridge Park Pier 1, Columbus Park, Coney Island Boardwalk, the Myrtle Avenue entrance and Visitors’ Center in Fort Greene Park, McCarren Park, the Carousel and Grand Army Plaza in Prospect Park, Von King Park, and Willoughby Plaza.
