By not shoveling the bike lane, the city is also leaving stretches of pedestrian crossings from the street to the sidewalk covered with snow and ice. And if they don't act fast, this most recent round of snow will ice over this weekend. So the sanitation department sees pedestrians who want to go to the park as a low priority, too.

LOLcat, you're hilarious. A guy says it would be okay for the city to focus on emergency vehicles and leave the bike lanes alone for a bit. Why, that's the very definition of an unreasonable troll!

Also, please stop calling it controversial. A tiny smattering of PPW residents don't like it, but something that reduces speeding and serious injuries is not controversial. Life jackets are not controversial, even if some people don't like how they look.

The bike lane debate here is done. It's not controversial, except for in the media and at Louise Hainline's house.

The Parks Dept meticulously clear the area where the farmers market will be on Saturday. That was all done by 1PM. It would have take 10 minutes or less to plow the length of the Bike Path. On Saturday that snow will freeze solid and stay there till it goes above freezing on Wednesday.

I can't wait for you to enjoy the police crack down. I am going to love to see all you bikers getting tickets for running red lights, and for failing to signal when turning using PROPER hand signal (no flipping off a car is not correct), and I can't wait to see you getting a ticket for not having a cute little bell on your cute bike. I can't wait for commercial bikes to get tickets for not having licenses on them as required by law, and my fav is that your bike can be confiscated for ridding on the sidewalk. In the picture it looks like Prospect Park West has become a side street because of all the crowding. It is kind of ironic that because of the bike lane, the once majestic street now looks smaller than 9th Street. Who would have believed that!

That picture doesn't even show the roadway. It just shows the bike part. Resident's comment doesn't even make sense.

Resident, one way to free up space on PPW would be to get rid of all the cars. Then it would nice and open with very little to block your view of the park. Very majestic indeed.

Some parts of the PPW bike lane still aren't plowed as of today. They had the park-side sidewalk plowed as fast as the street, btw -- that sidewalk was clear the morning of the storm. Last night I saw an elderly man biking down the middle of PPW beside an unplowed stretch of bike lane. There's just no excuse to keep the lane unplowed this long.

Once I got wind that the bike lane was being plowed, I called Sanitation and told them to stop. Unfortunately, they had already cleared from Bartel-Pritchard to 7th Street.

Yeah totally we'll halt plowing the bikes lanes right away. no problem at all Marty we understand how much this means to you. Steve from PPW is always on here bad mouthing people, telling them what they should and shouldn't say, calling people liars and other names telling the paper as well what they should and shouldn't be writing stories on...
Grab a shovel tough guy and start shoveling your precious bike lane yourself! Why should sanitation go out of its way for you? Let the DOT morons that are putting in all the bike lanes and speed bumps all over do it!!!

Plowing bike lanes causes too big a carbon footprint and isn't very "green"! therefore bike lane supporters are destroying the atmosphere,man!
Maybe you can tie a shovel to the front of your bike?
Maybe you and your 16 roommates can chip in for a shovel and clear that lane yourselves?

The city just isn't doing a good job clearing snow period!

Whether you like the bike lane or not it exists and if it's not cleared people will bike on the street or sidewalk, both of which are already more narrow because of snow piles from plowing (and making the bike lane in the first place). So if the city built it they should maintain it!

I live on ppw and I don't think the bikelane has caused major problems. However, two annoying side effects I have seen:
1) drivers who use the bike lane as a space to unload all of their crap for picnics in the park. First, why oh why do you need all of that crap? Second, how are people supposed to ride if you're in the lane taking your sweet time unloading 12 coolers? (I'd say the same thing if that space was a sidewalk for pedestrians)

2) bikers who seem oblivious to pedestrians and don't even offer to stop if a pedestrian gets the light and has a limited amount of time to cross. There are a few locations along the park where a lot of pedestirans enter and if they have the light to get across PPW I think there should also be a light on the bike lane to stop the bikes (if needed, maybe install buttons for walkers to push that would activate the bike stop light). Walkers should have a chance to get entirely across the street not be forced to stop where the cars are parked especially during peak season when there are a lot of people crossing at once.
