Tower power! Flatbush Avenue's got two more on the way

FIRST LOOK: This rendering shows the gigantic residential tower, center, plus a shorter skyscraper that developers are planning for the site of the demolished Albee Square Mall on Flatbush Avenue Extension between Dekalb Avenue and Willoughby Street Downtown.

Here it is — Brooklyn’s tallest building!

Developers showed off this rendering of the skyscrapers planned for the former Albee Square Mall — the long-stalled Downtown City Point retail and residential complex on Flatbush Avenue Extension between Willoughby Street and DeKalb Avenue.

The mock-ups, which were presented to Community Board 2 earlier today, showed two gargantuan skyscrapers on Flatbush.

The plan needs the approval of the city before it can move forward.

The two towers — the taller of which could rise to 65 stories or more — would be completed in 2015 and 2016, according to Paul Travis, of Washington Square Partners, which is part of the team of developers behind the plan.

City Point’s first building at Albee Square — the City Point mall — is almost complete and slated to open in June with 50,000 square feet of retail.

Nice, slender shape and a good spot for a building of this height (though I'd hardly call 65 floors "gargantuan" - what's with the hyperbole?).

This should only go through if it will include a large portion of low and middle income residential apartments set aside (33% low income, 33% middle income, 33% market rate). More exclusively luxury towers are not necessary.

Josef, developers are in the business to make money off of their projects not giving them away for nothing. I would be fine with less low income and more middle income housing. I think middle income housing is the most underserved area of housing.

Yay! special lottery housing that is so strangely restrictive that it isn't actually very positive for the tenants/buyers... but then the developer and the owners gets to avoid paying taxes for a couple decades!! Yippeee!! I'm sure millions and millions of dollars of lost revenue is worth the trade off for a few dozen families getting a slightly different (though probably not better) living situation.

anythings better than what's been there for the past 65 years.the renderings look alot better than the Steiner buildings a few blocks south.
the sooner the project starts the better the neighborhood, that area used to be the wild west..

Just to clarify, the two towers referred to in the article are on the far left side and middle left of the picture. The tallest building in the illustration is sort of transparent because there isn't a date scheduled for its construction, just sometime in the future...

Before you start praising Ratner, MTC was hardly a success for the neighborhood. As a matter of fact, that was the first time he abused eminent domain and used corporate welfare to have it. Downtown Brooklyn lost a lot of blocks of historic architecture for this. Another thing is that MTC felt more like an office park than something going with the neighborhood. Even when JP Morgan Chase agreed to locate there, they didn't even hire anyone local, but relocate their existing employees instead, which was a stab in the back for those who backed that complex. Even worse, it was nothing but a white elephant, so in order to help out Ratner, numerous city and state government agencies and departments located there, and they too relocated existing employees rather than just hiring locals. Seriously, since when does the government decide to be a tenant rather than an owner? The answer is when it comes to bailing them out, and its taxpayer dollars that are paying their bills.

that area was a bunch of crappy old buildings, run down with no merit...anything that was built is ten times better than what was there...why didn't you come in and buy these run down properties and keep them any way you wanted. you couldn't walk down willoughby st after dark it was dangerous..

I just love remarks from people removed from the area.

After the 70's, things got better and the neighborhood started to become safe again. It was only after that when Ratner wanted to build MTC there. If that was never the case, he wouldn't even want to set foot there, and the same goes for AY and his malls. There are gun shots in other parts of Brooklyn and even in the rest of the city, but I never hear him going there. In reality, MTC was nothing but an office park that was actually against 24-7 communities. Just try going there on weekends or after hours, and you will see how empty it is. Nevertheless, Brooklyn isn't Dubai or Shanghai either, which just builds new skyscrapers just for the fun of it. Sometimes, it's better to have quality over quantity, plus cities do deserve some of its past when it comes to architecture.

The building that has replaced Albee Square mall is ugly, possibly uglier than the Toren. Are these developers giving their mistresses' nephews the design jobs or are they drawing these buildings themselves?

It makes the Dime Bank building look even more stately and beautiful. There should be a plan to reface the atrocious CityPoint mall in 5 years.

Someone had to point out the Emperor(s) with no clothing. The wrong architects are laughing to the bank.
