18th Annual Bay Fest comes to Emmons Avenue

Sheepshead Bay overflowed with family−friendly fun as spring revelers celebrated the borough’s liquid jewel by heading for Bay Fest 2009.

Presented by the Bay Improvement Group (BIG), the 18th annual frolic drew mom, dad and the kids to enjoy a day of crowd−pleasing attractions, activities and amusements along Emmons Avenue, which showcased the waterfront community’s “ambience, tradition, character and charm.”

Five live bands serenaded visitors with traditional sea chanteys, and music from the ‘60s to present day, while the New York Fire Department staged a fireboat demonstration, and representatives from the New York Aquarium, the Brooklyn Public Library and other local organizations provided exhibits and information booths, acquainting visitors with available services in the area.

The festival was “especially significant” this year, said BIG President Steve Barrison because, “It, literally, will ‘save the bay’ by allowing us the funds to continue in our efforts to fight developers who would, in fact, destroy the small−scale maritime character of our community.”
