A crossing guard with 40 years experience was a center of attention at the October meeting of the 68th Precinct Community Council.
Marie Tarzia – who came on the job in 1968 — was honored for her “unparalleled dedication in serving the schools and the children of the Bay Ridge community,” during the meeting held at St. Patrick’s, Fourth Avenue and 97th Street.
Roars of approbation and loud applause greeted Tarzia, as she walked to the front of the room to collect her commendations and the several bouquets of flowers presented to her.
Tarzia has “been at the same corner (near St. Ephrem’s School) for 40 years,” noted Ilene Sacco, the community council president. “She has crossed the second and third generations of kids,” Sacco added.
Among the honors collected by Tarzia, who is still on the job, was a City Council proclamation from City Councilmember Vincent Gentile, who had been crossed by Tarzia during her long career.
