Two men posing as water department employees stole an elderly man’s wallet from his 62nd Street home on Feb. 1.
The 89-year-old victim told police he was in the house, which is between 12th and 13th avenues, at around 12:40 pm when the two suspects rang the door bell, identified themselves as company maintenance workers and told him they needed to check for leaks.
Once inside, the men grabbed the victim’s wallet off a nightstand and then fled with more than $700.
Three burgs
At least other three neighborhood homes were burgled last week. Here’s a roundup:
• Someone broke into a Fourth Avenue apartment on Jan. 27, making off with nearly $10,000 in jewelry.
The 51-year-old owner of the home, between 79th and 80th streets, told cops he at around noon. When he returned four hours later, he discovered that someone had grabbed the silver and gold rings, bracelets and necklaces from inside.
• Three days later, someone broke into a Wakeman Place apartment and stole more than $4,000 in electronics and jewelry.
The victim, 42, told cops that he left the home, at the corner of Second Avenue, at around 6:45 am and returned at 4 pm.
• On the same day, a teenage girl startled an intruder who broke into her 67th Street home on Jan. 30.
The 16-year-old victim told cops that she was in her room when she looked up and saw a man standing outside on the front staircase.
When the burglar saw her, he fled down the stairs and out the front door, but not before grabbing $8,000 and two diamond and ruby rings from inside the home.
Stop, drunk!
A thief with a penchant for Jack Daniel’s whiskey broke into a Fifth Avenue bar sometime overnight on Jan. 28.
The owner of the popular neighborhood hangout, which is between 80th and 81st streets, told cops that when he arrived at around 6 am on Jan. 29, he noticed that a rear gate was wide open.
Once inside the bar, he found more than $1,200 missing from the cash register and two bottles of alcohol missing from the counter.
