A doggone crime

To The Editor:

Thank you for such prominent coverage of the alleged spite starvation of a dog in Brooklyn Heights.

Animal abuse laws are notoriously week all across the country and New York is no exception. Even when found guilty, abusers rarely face jail time, for even the most heinous cruelty to animals.

The law follows a culture which regards animals as property rather than sentient creatures who can suffer. If the allegations are proved the punishment should fit the crime.
