Keen hearing earned two cops top honors at a recent meeting of the 84th Precinct Community Council.
On September 18, Officers Thomas Pavic and Michael Maywald were on routine patrol when they observed two males on Myrtle Avenue and Prince Street.
According to Leslie Lewis, the president of the community council, one of the men had a pit bull terrier, and the cops observed the pooch, presumably playing, jump on the second male.
The cops — still in their vehicle — then overheard the second male, in response to the dog’s advances, say, “I have a gun.”
The cops, confident with what they had heard, circled back and pulled over, stopping the individual and discovering in his possession a .40-caliber semiautomatic handgun.
The man was arrested and taken into custody for criminal possession of a weapon.
“We can’t really count and measure how many lives they may have saved,” said Captain Alan Abel, the former commanding officer of the precinct.
Lewis praised the cops’ professionalism — as well as their uncanny sense of hearing.
“They were paying attention to people in the street, and made it their business to overhear them,” Lewis said.
For their efforts, the cops received hearty applause and certificates inscribed with their names.
