A lifelong educator took center stage at the April meeting of Community Board 10.
The board presented Karina Costantino, the superintendent of School District 20, with its Honor of the Pledge during its monthly meeting, which was held at the Knights of Columbus, 86th Street and 13th Avenue.
Costantino, who has been at the helm of District 20 since July, 2007, is a Bay Ridge native, who attended P.S. 170 and McKinley Intermediate School. “I was just delighted to come back home to District 20,” she told the group.
She also told board members that she was especially pleased to lead the pledge. “As an educator,” Costantino said, “whenever I get the opportunity to celebrate the country, I do. It’s just so important to reinforce to our youngsters how lucky they are to live in a country likes ours.” The pledge, she added, gives students an opportunity “to celebrate our freedom every day.”
Costantino, while now an administrator, is a “teacher at heart,” noted Dean Rasinya, the board’s chair.
