Calling all teens!
A Youth Expo sponsored by Brooklyn Community Board 14 – whose catchment area includes Flatbush, Midwood and Kensington – is being held on May 22 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Brooklyn College Art Lab, 301 Roosevelt Hall (Floor 3R), 2900 Bedford Avenue.
Featured at the event will be summer job opportunities, youth services and activities, community service opportunities as well as free food and musical performances.
The target audience for the event – a first for CB 14 – includes youngsters between the ages of 13 and 19.
“This is a really huge thing for the board,” noted Doris Ortiz, CB 14’s district manager, at the board’s May meeting, which was held at Edward R. Murrow High School, 1600 Avenue L.
“We are really excited,” Ortiz went on. “The most exciting thing is that the young people themselves are planning it. I think it’s going to be very successful.”
The focus, added CB 14 Chairperson Alvin Berk, is going to be on the teens.
“Doris said to me, You are the chair, so you get to stand up and greet them, but keep it to 20 seconds or less. They don’t want to hear from you,” Berk told the assembled group.
The event has “been like a snowball,” said Ed Powell, the chairperson of the board’s Youth Services Committee. “It’s been building in terms of participation and in terms of sponsorship. It’s really growing.”
Among those who have indicated their intention of participating, said Powell, are Target, which recently opened up a store at the Junction, as well as the Prospect Park Alliance Youth Committee and CAMBA.
“This time, we have something really good going on,” stressed Powell. “This is probably one of the biggest things that CB 14 has done in years.”
