Alternate side parking has been suspended in sections of Bay Ridge affected by the city’s replacement of water mains and sewer lines.
Since the city began working on the water and sewer lines under 86th Street between Shore Road and Gatling Place, the offices of both Councilman Vincent J. Gentile and Community Board 10 had been flooded with complaints from residents and business owners over the lack of parking along 86th Street.
Bi-weekly alternate side parking made the parking space deficit even more difficult for residents.
Twice each week, cars are restricted from parking along one side of the street to make way for Department of Sanitation street-cleaning vehicles.
Taking out 50 percent of an area’s parking options in this way, coupled with the parking limitations due to the sewer and water work, had Bay Ridge frustrated.
Responding to local frustrations, Gentile and Community Board 10 submitted separate suspension requests to the Department of Transportation and Department of Sanitation.
The Department of Sanitation granted that request.
Now to October 10, alternate side parking along 85th and 87th streets from Shore Road to Fifth Avenue will be suspended.
Teachers, business owners and residents will be able to park in any available spot on either side of the road seven days a week.
“The Community Board is delighted with the Department of Sanitation’s help in alleviating the parking problem due to the 86th Street project,” Community Board 10 District Manager Josephine Beckmann said.
“We have received complaints from teachers at local schools, local business owners and residents who are finding it difficult to simply run their businesses, get to work and take their children to school,” Gentile said.
“It’s my hope that this suspension of alternate street parking will make the next several weeks a little easier for them.”
Once work on the affected roads is complete, regular parking rules will continue as usual.
