Amos Wengler, the Bard of Coney Island, stopped by our DUMBO offices on Monday to sing his hit single, “Save Coney Island” — and, more important, send a message in song to the Bloomberg Administration.
Wengler has been singing on the Boardwalk for 20 years, but he didn’t truly find his voice until Joe Sitt, a real-estate speculator, started buying up land in the faded “People’s Playground.” Wengler opposed Sitt’s original plan for a Vegas-style, year-round theme park and condo complex, though he has some problems with the city’s version, which substitutes high-rise hotels for Sitt’s condos.
Either way, Wengler’s voice has never been stronger, as BrooklynPaper.com viewers can see by clicking the accompanying video. Enjoy.
