So you think that since the judge gave Arizona Governor Jan Brewer and her new law a thumbs down, she lost? No way. The intentions of S.B. 1070 were to reduce the number of illegals in the Grand Canyon state and, in turn, decrease the devastating operating expenses to the city, state and county governments — and their legal residents.
Even without that law, the enormous negative publicity has the illegals moving out in droves.
Where are they going? Certainly not back to where they came from.
There has been a marked increase of foreign population in many states, and right now, several of them are considering passing laws of their own. Should those laws be struck down, at least the elected officials will be showing their constituents that they are listening to the will of the people.
The “will of the people” is something Americans have been discussing quite a bit lately. Current polls prove that our reps in the District of Columbia are not paying attention to the citizens. They may have to learn the hard way.
The latest state to make its feelings known to the world is the great state of Florida, one of the lands of my people. (Somewhere in the scriptures it is written that when a New York Jew retires, he is to go way down to the promised lands of Fort Lauderdale, Boynton Beach, Boca Raton and points south.) Up until the economy took a distressing downturn, the Sunshine State was one of the fastest-growing areas in America. We recently learned that it has begun to grow again, but not with heat-seeking northerners like yours truly.
Attorney General Bill McCollum, who is running for governor, originally stated that Florida does not need the Arizona law. But politics — and the assumed will of the people — does strange things. So McCollum has flipped on the issue.
Last week he stated his approval of a new bill dealing with the issue of illegal immigrants. It is estimated that there are now more than one million of them in Florida. How does anyone get to that number? Who knows? Maybe it’s only 900,000. Maybe only eight. Then again, perhaps with the recent outward migration from Arizona, maybe the number is a lot more than a million.
Nobody really knows. What the Florida experts do know is that there are significant costs that go with the population change. Florida spends $90 million on incarcerated illegal aliens. The annual cost for un-reimbursed medical procedures is now up to $290 million. That’s the small change. Let’s get into the big bucks. Florida spends $2.9 BILLION per year to educate illegal immigrant children and their U.S.-born siblings. The Projected Budget Shortfall for this year is well over $3 BILLION. Can you really blame our friends down south for wanting to make change?
Hey there, Gov. Patterson. I have no doubts that somewhere in Albany there are staff members who have already crunched our numbers. Do we know how many illegal aliens there are in New York? Do you think we can find out how much they are costing us? Is there any chance at all that the current administration will do something to correct a bad situation?
