The Red Hook Initiative (RHI) will hold a “Back on the Block Party,” May 8 from 6−9:30 p.m. to celebrate their newly signed lease on the building, which will become their new community center for years to come.
The Back on the Block Party will feature RHI’s work, showcase young talent from the neighborhood, and will share the plans to renovate the empty warehouse into a fully functional community center.
Raffle tickets, food, and Red Hook t−shirts and buttons will all be sold in an effort to raise $5,000 toward the overall goal of $350,000 needed for the renovation.
Residents of the Red Hook Houses have already been making donations toward the project since RHl lost their space in November 2008.
Currently, RHI is operating out of a temporary space in Red Hook and running all programs through churches, schools and other community spaces. If they are able to raise the needed $350,000, they will move in to their permanent home in September 2009.
RHI provides programs and services for youth ages nine to 24 as well as parents and families from the neighborhood, and is staffed by 46 residents of the Red Hook Houses.
