It was a back-to-school special!
Kids from Walt Whitman and Ingersoll Houses picked up new backpacks at an Aug. 31 giveaway that got squirts excited for the first day of classes on Thursday, according to a parent.
“He loves it,” said Latiema Edwards, whose son 2-year-old son Kasim starts preschool this year. “He was excited because he’s starting school and he got to pick out a new backpack.”
The New York City Housing Authority teamed up with developers Slate Property Group and Meadow Partners to provide youngsters from the Fort Greene and Downtown public housing complexes with 300 backpacks, which were decked out in kid-approved designs including “Frozen,” “Spiderman,” and “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.”
Kasim chose a “Paw Patrol” knapsack donning animated characters from the children’s television series he can’t get enough of, his mom said.
“He was so excited. That’s his favorite cartoon, he watches it every single day,” she said.
Tots also stocked up on school supplies, including notebooks and pencils, to stuff in their new bags at the event.
