Band Fags: Straight- A students explore alternate lifestyles

Frank Anthony Polito, a Brooklyn-based actor and playwright, has just published his first novel, Band Fags! (Kensington Publishing, June 2008, Paperback/Original, $15).

Based on his 2001 stage play, John R, which premiered in New York City starring Tony Award-nominee John Tartaglia, Band Fags! tells the story of straight-A student, Jack Paterno, and his best friend since 11th grade, Brad Dayton.

As the boys make their way through junior high and high school during the mid-to-late 1980s, it becomes clear that maybe they’ve got more in common than marching in the school band.

From stealing furtive glances at Playgirl to discussing which guys they would find attractive – if they were girls – Jack is trying to figure out who and what he is. And while he and Brad have both long been labeled “Band Fags,” Jack is certain he’s not a real fag…Or is he?

Filled with biting wit and pitch-perfect observation, Band Fags! is a novel about lust and love, about the friendships that define and sometimes confine us, and about coming of age and coming to terms with the end of innocence and the beginning of something terrifying, thrilling, and completely unpredictable.

The book will be launched in Brooklyn during a special event, May 26, with an ‘80s Night Party at Floyd, 131 Atlantic Avenue; for information on this event, call 718-858-5810.
