Four people were injured by an all-hands fire at a Bath Beach apartment building on Saturday morning.
The blaze broke out on the top floor of four-story building at the corner of Cropsey Avenue and Bay Parkway at 11 a.m. on July 12, according to the FDNY. When firefighters arrived on the scene, smoke was pouring from the windows of a fourth-floor unit, and several people were trapped inside the building, including one woman who waved a napkin from her open window to get the attention of firefighters down below.
“My niece and nephews ages 1 month, a year and a half and 3 were trapped inside,” one woman said. “It was scary as hell.”
Crews moved quickly to evacuate the rest of the residents as they battled the main body of the fire. Three civilians and one firefighter were hospitalized with minor injuries, per the FDNY, and the blaze was brought under control at 12:16 p.m.
The cause of the blaze was not immediately clear, and will be investigated by the FDNY’s fire marshal. A July 12 complaint filed with the Department of Buildings said there were exposed or defective wires within the building, documents show.
