Bay Ridge loses community stalwart

Philip Schirripa, a lifelong Bay Ridge resident, who worked as a bartender/manager in Antiquity’s Pub (now Kopperfields), The Full Moon Saloon and The Schnitzel Haus. and was one of the owners of The Full Moon Saloon from 1998-2005, died last month. He was 56 years-old.

A loving husband, devoted son, brother and brother-in-law, uncle, godfather, nephew, cousin and loyal and respected friend, Schirripa attended PS 127, St. Anselm, Fort Hamilton High School, and Hunter College. He excelled at football and softball, and, as the unofficial “Community Mayor” of Bay Ridge, was also involved in programs to help special needs children. Schirripa enjoyed volunteering his time on trips to Nellie Bly, the circus, and the JFK Airport Operation Santa Claus party.

Schirripa always enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, whether at home in Bay Ridge or riding his jet ski at his summer getaway home in Greenwood Lake, New Jersey. He was fond of fine wine and delicious foods, as well as being an avid New York Yankees fan.

Friends and family described Schirripa as “considerate, dependable, generous, giving, honest, loving, patriotic, reliable, respected, respectful, responsible, and thoughtful.”

He is survived by his wife, Mary Booras Schirripa; mother Bianca; brother Joe, and nephew Joseph.
