Public School 119 continues to play a big part in the lives of Paula Held and Howard Teitelbaum – even though the pair graduated from the Flatbush school almost 60 years ago.
The grads, hailing from the Class of 1950, made the annual trek from Queens to their alma mater – 3829 Avenue K – to interview students for their Legacy Scholarship awards, which endow six budding wordsmiths with $100 each for writing winning stories about how they serve their communities.
Held and Teitelbaum’s own union is the stuff of fairy tales. They met in the eighth grade, when Teitelbaum relocated with his family from the Bronx to Brooklyn, and didn’t meet up again until the school’s 50−year reunion in 2000, kindling a romance which led to their recent marriage, and the formation of their scholarship fund.
This year, the big−hearted couple sweetened the pot by requesting that wedding guests make donations to the school instead of buying gifts.
