The Bensonhurst West End Community Council will celebrate its 48th Gala on November 19 at the beautiful El Caribe. As you well know by now, I will be celebrating my 28th year as President of the BWECC and as is my custom every year, I spotlight each honoree in this column, so you know their credentials, their merits, and their outstanding contributions to the community that earned them their coveted ‘BWECC Year” award. Now I will spotlight this wonderful lady, Madelene Chan.
Madelene S. Taub-Chan has been a lifelong resident of Brooklyn. She attended Public School 100, Junior High School 303, and Abraham Lincoln High School. Mrs. Taub-Chan received her B.S. and M.S. in Education from Brooklyn College. She received her Professional Degree in Learning Styles from St. John’s University and her degree in Educational Administration and Leadership from Long Island University.
Madelene S. Taub-Chan has served as an educator in District 21 since 1983. She began her teaching career at P.S. 90 as a first grade teacher. From 1995-1997 Mrs. Taub-Chan received her Assistant Principal’s license and accepted a position in Moriches Elementary School in Moriches, New York. In September of 1997, Mrs. Taub-Chan returned to her “first home” to become the Assistant Principal of P.S. 90 under the leadership of her longtime mentor, Edna Cohen. In 2003, Mrs. Taub-Chan was appointed as the Principal of P.S. 90. She has acknowledged that she humbly accepted the principal position and feels fortunate, each day, for the opportunity to work collaboratively with the staff, students, parents and community that make up the heart and soul of the school. She finds it extremely rewarding that staff and students share her vision and work in a safe, enjoyable and productive environment.
Mrs. Taub-Chan’s inspiration is her incredibly supportive and loving husband Michael, and her two shining stars, her sons Jared and Ryan. Family is Mrs. Taub-Chan’s personal passion and she thanks her wonderful parents, Harvey and Estelle Taub, her in laws Joseph and Agnes Chan and her amazing family: Adrienne, David, Samuel, Sophia, Stacy, Victor, Jasen, Stephanie, Margaret, Simon, Mary, John and Cianna for giving her the strength and determination needed to be a successful New York City principal
Mrs. Taub-Chan always knew she was going to be a teacher. She thanks Mr. Samuel Amster, Mr. Donald Weber and Mrs. Ethel Tucker for making that dream become a reality. Additional thanks to Mrs. Iris Baum and Mr. Richard D’Auria for their tremendous support and for being her constant source of knowledge.
Madelene told me she is deeply honored to be recognized for her achievements by the Bensonhurst West End Community Council along with such respected educators and community leaders as Mr. Barry Fein, Mrs. Judy Gerowitz, Assemblyman and Mrs. Colton, and Cecile Iocono. She attributes being “Woman of the Year” to the constant love and support of her friends, family, and colleagues.
Now with this impressive honoree mentioned above, the Gala will be a sell out and reservations are not only highly recommended but necessary. So if you want to join us in honoring this splendid group of educators, call me at 718-946-6665.
Screech at you next week!
