The students and staff of Bishop Kearney High School’s Kearney Players are hard at work on their production of “Flapper!,” a little known gem from Pioneer Drama Service, Inc., combining Tim Kelly’s flair for madcap comedy with Bill Francoeur’s witty lyrics and lively music.
The plot, characters, costumes and songs recall the days of carefree young flappers and their short skirts, bobbed hair, cupid bow lips, cloche hats, powered knees and Studebaker automobiles.
Polly Pepper is a popular Southampton Long Island debutante who is about to turn eighteen and inherit the famous” Ice Garden” diamond necklace. Her birthday party is to be the social event of the season and Monica, the snobbish and temperamental radio show celebrity, helps to keep the excitement building as the day approaches.
However, Mona, the conniving owner of the Crazy Cat Nite Club, plots with petty gangsters to steal the diamond while the Duke and Duchess of Milford, a couple of con artists, put all their energy into selling phony stocks and bonds to Polly’s wealthy aunt, Mrs. Augusta Granville. Will the villains succeed?
