Thousands of walkers, including breast cancer survivors and their loved ones, made their way into the Prospect Park for the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk.
Young and old turned out to show their support for this important cause including one team, The Honeybees, formed by Lori Caiazzo, staff developer at PS 255, which made a very large donation to the American Cancer Society through online donations, collections and T-shirt sales.
The Honeybees’ bright tie-dyed shirts created a buzz when the walkers began the three and a half-mile mile walk around the park. Agnes Shapiro, secretary at PS 255, 1866 East 17th Street, was co-captain of the team, which included teachers, the guidance counselor, secretaries and the security officer, Darlene Gaston.
The school’s staff, along with family and friends, helped make the team’s dream into a reality: “All I wanted was to have a picture of a large team wearing the same T-shirt. I wanted to make a difference by helping to make a large donation,” Co-Captain Caiazzo stated.
The Honeybees donated $3,500 and is still collecting more.
