Las Rubias Del Norte will perform as part
of the second anniversary celebration of Barbes bar and performance
space in Park Slope on May 1.
The band – whose name, translated from the Spanish, is "The
Blondes of the North" – have a new album, "Rumba Internationale,"
which is the first CD on the Barbes "house label,"
said Olivier Conan, the bar’s owner and the band’s vocalist and
      Venezuelan cuatro player.
Comprised of a group of musicians from the United States, France
and Colombia, Las Rubias perform – in live gigs around Brooklyn
and on this eight-track CD – primarily popular Latin music, in
Spanish, such as boleros, cha chas and cumbias written by Margarita
Lecuona, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart among many others.
Although "recorded live at Giancarlo [Vulcano]’s apartment,"
the album doesn’t suffer from any technical difficulties, and
it really is a collection of utterly hip, soothing lounge music
sung by the sweet yet sexy voices of Emily Hurst and Allyssa
      Lamb.
Following the performance by Las Rubias, Bebe Eiffel will take
the stage. Although Bebe Eiffel has many band members in common
with Las Rubias, explained Conan, a native of France, that band
plays predominantly original compositions sung in French.
Las Rubias Del Norte are Taylor Bergren-Chrisman (double bass),
Greg Burrows (percussion), Conan (cuatro, vocals), Hurst (vocals,
glockenspiel), Lamb (vocals, melodica), Vulcano (guitar) and
      Alison Young (vocals).
Las Rubias Del Norte perform at Barbes [376 Ninth St. at Sixth
Avenue in Park Slope] on May 1 at 8 pm. Admission is $5. For
