Admit it, you don’t want to miss Marty Markowitz bobblehead night.
Tickets for regular season Brooklyn Cyclones games go on sale next Sunday, April 29 at Keyspan Park in Coney Island. Former Brooklyn Dodger great Johnny Podres will sign autographs from 9 to 11 am.
The Cyclones’ seventh season will be replete with the usual fun and games, including post-game fireworks every Friday night; an appearance by Gerry Cooney on July 9; an appearance by Brooklyn Dodger legend Don Newcombe — and bobblehead doll giveaway — on July 22; and an appearance by former Met great (and Yankee coach) Lee Mazzilli — plus the ubiquitous bobblehead giveaway — on Aug. 20.
But that’s nothing compared to what will happen on Aug. 5.
No politician wants to be a waffler, but a bobblehead?
“It’s a honor,” Markowitz told The Brooklyn Paper. “Not so bad for a guy who played left out.”
Cyclones General Manager Steve Cohen said the Markowitz doll is part of the team’s “Brooklyn Legends” series. In reality, though, it’s most likely a result of an important factor: Markowitz agreed to participate.
“These things are so hard,” Cohen said. “We also wanted Barbra Streisand and Neil Diamond, but you need their permission.”
Barring a sudden call from Streisand and Diamond, the “Legends” bobblehead series consists of Markowitz, Newcombe, Mazzilli, Met manager Willie Randolph and the Brooklyn Bridge itself.
Markowitz said he felt he was in good company.
“I did have one moment of greatness as a softball player,” he said. “A guy was on third and I hit a ball with the bat over the pitcher’s head. It dropped in and by the time he picked it up, the run had scored.”
