A hipster thrift store that fled rising rents on Williamsburg’s main drag has set up shop in the industrial other end of the neighborhood.
Beacon’s Closet is opening a fourth location on Bogart Street near Bushwick after expanding to Greenpoint in April, following the migrating low-rent, willing-to-pay-high-prices-for-a-thrift-store crowd that frequented its original shop.
“A lot of our demographics and shoppers have moved out that way and a lot of our employees now live out there too,” said Beacon’s Closet president Carrie Peterson.
Peterson signed the lease for the store between Varet and Cook streets in the month between when the Williamsburg store at N. 11th Street and Bedford Avenue closed in early March and she managed to get the store on Guernsey Street in Greenpoint opened.
“We lost out on a lot of business and I did not know how long it would take to open the store,” she said, explaining the move to open another store. “I wanted to make sure my employees were not out of a job.”
The new outlet is only a third of the size of the Greenpoint store, but will sell the same eclectic mix of secondhand clothing and kitschy knick-knacks. It opened on Tuesday and employs 12, Peterson said.
