August 6 at Tri-City

The Cyclones were held to one run on three hits in a 4–1 loss to Tri-City as the offense struggled again on Saturday night.

Brooklyn got on the board first, taking an early lead in the second as Gene Cone led off with a single off Tri-City starter Enrique Chavez. With one out, Cone stole second and moved to third on a throwing error by catcher Chuckie Robinson. Another ValleyCats error – this one by first baseman Taylor Jones on a ball hit by Blake Tiberi – allowed Cone to score. It was the only run Brooklyn scored off Chavez.

It looked like the one run might hold as Clones starter Thomas Szapucki no-hit the ValleyCats for the first five innings and struck out 11.

Marcos Almonte led off the Tri-Ciry sixth with a walk, stole second and advanced to third on a Brandon Brosher throwing error. With one out, Brauly Mejia doubled to center, tying the game and ending Szapucki’s night. It was the first earned run Szapucki has given up all season.

Back-to-back singles by Robinson and Jones off reliever Taylor Henry gave Tri-City a 2–1 lead. Tyler Wolfe padded the Tri-City cushion with a solo home run off Henry in the seventh inning.

Ty Williams took the mound for Brooklyn in the eighth and struggled down the stretch. Robinson worked a leadoff walk, moved to second on a wild pitch, advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on a Spencer Johnson double.

Dustin Hunt pitched three shutout innings to pick up the save for the ValleyCats.

The 24–24 Cyclones are back at it on Sunday at Tri-City.
