Brooklyn gas main break leads to evacuation

A gas main break led to over a dozen homes being evacuated in Bath Beach Thursday.

Officials said that a construction crew working in the street on Bay 17th Street between 86th Street and Benson Avenue unearthed and ruptured a four-inch gas pipe at 11 a.m.

A strong gas odor permeated the block, leading to the evacuation of several homes, witnesses said.

No injuries were reported. Residents were allowed back into their home after the gas main was closed off and the smell dissipated.

Officials from National Grid said that the rupture only left one home without gas. Service was restored to the home by the end of the day.
