From salsa to sea creatures, what to do this month at the Brooklyn Museum

The Brooklyn Museum on Eastern Parkway in Prospect Heights is kicking off February with a slate of events designed to draw in visitors of all ages to what it proudly calls the “People’s Museum.”

The month’s programming includes the museum’s first First Saturdays of 2026, a lively Lunar New Year festival ushering in the spirited Year of the Horse, and a range of creative workshops for families.

Highlights include:

First Saturday: Imitate No One

Saturday, Feb. 7, 5-10 p.m.
Free; however, registration is required and includes Museum general admission.  Tickets are released on a rolling basis, and visitors are encouraged to sign up for the Brooklyn Museum newsletter to be notified of the next release.

This edition of the museum’s popular First Saturday marks Black History Month with a tribute to trailblazing artists who reinvent tradition. Visitors can take in a lively mix of music, magic, art-making, poetry, and more as the celebration unfolds throughout the museum.

Salsa Party

Thursday, Feb. 12, 6-9:30 p.m.
Lobby, 1st Floor
Free; however, registration is encouraged, as admission is limited and on a first-come, first-served basis. A limited number of tickets will be available at the door.

Put on your most comfortable dancing shoes and celebrate the return of the Museum’s Salsa Party series with a dance-filled evening hosted by Balmir Dance Society. Kick off the evening with a lesson led by professional dancers at 6 pm, followed by live music, social dancing, and performances by the borough’s best Latin dance teams.

Drop-In Workshops: Life at Sea

Saturday-Sunday, Feb. 14-15 and 28, 11 a.m.-5:30 p.m.;
Wednesday-Friday, Feb. 18-20, 12-4 p.m.

Free with Museum admission. Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

Visitors can take “a deep dive” into Oliver Jeffers: Life at Sea at this family-friendly event, and help expand this underwater world, designing colorful new ocean life, from coral to 3D fish, to add to Life at Sea.

For the Love of Art

Saturday, Feb. 14, 11:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m.

Free with Museum admission.

This Valentine’s Day event provides more than just a Hallmark holiday. Couples, friends, or individuals are invited to spend a romantic, platonic, or restorative solo Valentine’s Day while enjoying a variety of art- and poetry-centered activities.

Weekend Art: Saturday Sketch Club

Saturday, Feb. 14, 1-4 p.m.
Egyptian Galleries, 3rd Floor
Free with Museum admission. Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

Get inspired by the sculptures in the Museum’s Egyptian Galleries, and create sketches of works that reveal a variety of relationships among ancient Egyptians.

Lunar New Year Celebration

Sunday, Feb. 15, 12-4 p.m.
Throughout the Museum
Free with Museum admission.

Celebrate the Year of the Horse with lively performances and hands-on activities for all ages.

Brooklyn Symphony Orchestra: De Falla and Dvořák

Sunday, Feb. 15, 2-4 p.m.
Auditorium, 3rd Floor
Advance tickets are available through the Brooklyn Symphony Orchestra at $25 for standard admission and $20 for adults 65+ (excluding fees); same-day tickets are $30 at the door. Free for ages 16 and under.

Step into worlds both folkloric and symphonic at this concert conducted by Brooklyn Symphony Orchestra Artistic Director Felipe Tristán.

Poetry Workshop: Rubin Museum Tibetan Buddhist Shrine Room

Contemplate the Museum’s Asian Art collection and the Rubin Museum Tibetan Buddhist Shrine Room, and join Tsering Wangmo Dhompa, associate professor of literature and creative writing at Villanova University, for this generative poetic creative-writing experience.

Stroller Tours: Everyday Rebellions

Wednesday, Feb. 25, 10-11:15 a.m.
Center for Feminist Art, 4th Floor
Tickets are $38 per family (1 adult and 1 child) and include Museum general admission. Additional adults can be added for $16 each.

The interactive tour of Everyday Rebellions: Collection Conversations is designed for children up to 24 months and features touchable objects, songs, and engaging explorations of artworks, showcasing how contemporary artists infuse daily life with gestures of creative defiance.

Family Concerts: Lilli and the Firebird

Saturday, Feb. 28, 1-2:15 p.m. and 3:30-4:45 p.m.

Tickets for both showings are $25 for adults, $15 for ages 18 and under, and include Museum admission.

The Brooklyn Conservatory Community Orchestra will perform thrilling music from Stravinsky’s Firebird, Wicked, and more for a riotously funny adventure for the whole family (ages four and older).
