BUMPIN’ BELLIES

BUMPIN’ BELLIES

As part of its
"Brazil Transplanted: Carnival in New York" conference
on Feb. 15, Long Island University’s Downtown Brooklyn campus
will offer a free performance by an Afro-Brazilian ensemble.

This lunch-time show by Ologunde – a New York-based ensemble
under the direction of percussionist Dende, a former member of
Timbalada – promises to be more exciting than a prix fixe meal
during restaurant week.

The troupe’s repertoire includes a capoeira martial arts dance
as well as "candomble," a synthesis of the Yoruba and
Catholic religions in which various gods are invoked (pictured);
and the "samba de roda," a spontaneous dance in which
the dancers bump bellies.

The hourlong performance will start at noon at the Kumble Theater
on the Brooklyn campus of Long Island University, one block from
the intersection of DeKalb Avenue and Flatbush Avenue Extension.

For more information about the performance – or about the day-long
conference which also includes workshops, a film, panel discussion
and art exhibit – call (718) 488-3355.
