CHSAA baseball round-up: Xaverian clinches Brooklyn/Queens division

Anthony Hajjar tossed a complete-game three-hitter, striking out nine, to help lead Xaverian to a 6-2 win against Bishop Ford Tuesday afternoon in Brooklyn. The win, combined with St. Francis Prep’s loss at Archbishop Molloy, clinched the CHSAA Brooklyn/Queens ‘A’ division title for the Clippers.

Tim Nunez went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and J.T. Torres went 2-for-3 with a walk and an RBI for Xaverian (12-1), the defending Class A intersectional champion. Bishop Ford fell to 9-7.

Monsignor McClancy 5, Christ the King 0: Frank DiMaria allowed one hit in four innings and Kevin Briffa allowed two hits in three innings for a combined shutout Tuesday afternoon. Lou Perez and Tom Cloonen each had two RBIs for McClancy (8-8 CHSAA Brooklyn/Queens ‘A’), while Christ the King fell to 4-13.

Iona Prep 12, LaSalle 2: Colin Moran went 3-for-4, including a double, a triple and five RBIs and Alex Cebek went 3-for-3 with four RBIs for Iona Prep (9-8 CHSAA Bronx/Westchester ‘A’). LaSalle fell to 3-13.

Archbishop Stepinac 10, Regis 0: Rich Reilly went 3-for-3 with five RBIs and three runs scored and Greg DiGiacinto went the distance with eight strikeouts for Stepinac (12-5 CHSAA Bronx/Westchester ‘A’). Regis is now 6-10.

Holy Cross 10, St. Edmund Prep 4: Mike Ingersoll had a three-run double and James Moussa pitched four scoreless innings for Holy Cross (12-4), which jumped out to an 8-0 lead. The Knights have clinched second place in CHSAA Brooklyn/Queens ‘A’, while St. Edmund’s fell to 0-15.

Cardinal Hayes 8, St. Raymond’s 7: Hans Arias hit a bases-clearing double to put St. Raymond’s up 6-3, but the junior outfielder sliced his knee on a slide to third and was taken out of the game. Manny Rivera singled, doubled and hit a mammoth home run, but the Ravens pitchers combined to walk 10 and hit two, while St. Ray’s (11-6 CHSAA Bronx/Manhattan ‘A’) was victimized by four errors. Hayes, which has won four in a row, improves to 9-7.
